BECOMING A MORE INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY

How diversity, inclusion, and equity can make your community more prosperous for all citizens

By Noelle Salerno

Diversity, inclusion, and equity aren't new topics for economic developers, but they are becoming increasingly top of mind as communities work to address gaps in income, educational attainment, and overall economic prosperity.

A diverse, inclusive, and equitable community is a sign of strength and economic vitality, and can be an attractive asset for recruiting talent and business.

HEADLIGHT DATA ILLUMINATING TRENDS
FOR KY, NC, SC, AND TN COMMUNITIES
We're not even halfway through 2017 and Headlight Data has already launched five new data dashboards this year! New Headlight Data sites are active and informing decisions for the  South Carolina I-77 Alliance, the Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council in TN, the Fort Campbell Area in TN/KY, the Laurens County Development Corporation in SC, the York County Data Center in SC, and the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce in NC.  Check it out!

Each Headlight data center features in-depth,  easy-to-navigate data visualizations on critical economic and demographic stats, such as population trends, wages and income, industry growth, and social indicators.  Each Headlight Data  center is available at no cost to the pu blic, so site selectors, businesses, community leaders, and citizens  can make decisions based the freshest information available.

Headlight Data is Avalanche's sister company and our data visualization service.  We developed Headlight to reduce our clients' time collecting, analyzing and communicating current information on their economies.

HOW IS YOUR ECONOMY PERFORMING?
WE MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND OUT.

This month, Avalanche and Headlight Data released our  Economic Scorecard for Metros. This tool allows you to compare your community's economic performance against metros of a similar size. The Economic Scorecard compares job growth, top industries, and more. We also released a  Quarterly Economic Scorecard , which includes county-level statistics.

The Scorecard is available online and findings can be downloaded in image format, making it easy to share with your network or insert it into a presentation.

CELEBRATING OUR CLIENTS

We're toasting our clients, whose successes are gaining much deserved recognition. Since launching their strategic plan last month, the  Pflugerville CDC  has already announced several wins, including Accent Food Services, which will bring 85 full-time jobs to the community, and MW Builders, which will build its regional headquarters at 130 Commerce Center. In Douglas County, GA , the Business and Computer Science Career Pathway program, which provides high school students with computer and business skills they can use in the workforce, college, or military after graduating, was awarded a Stamp of Excellence in all five Douglas County high schools. In Jacksonville, FL , Shad Khan, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, will develop a 70-acre property on the beautiful waterfront. The development plans to bring in $500 million of private investment, apartments, condos, office space, a five-star hotel, and more to the area. Charlotte, NC was ranked #2 on NewGeography's list of Cities Creating the Most Tech Jobs in 2017, among many accolades, which is no surprise seeing as Charlotte has experienced a 62% growth in the tech industry in the past 10 years. Houston, TX was ranked #3 in fDi's list of American Cities of the Future for 2017/2018. We're excited to see this confirmation that the Greater Houston region is a top international community.

We applaud these clients and others, whose hard work is making measurable diffrerences in their communities. Keep up the great work y'all!  HIGH FIVES all around.

AVALANCHE IN ACTION

Here are a few snapshots of Avalanche in action:

On the road... Since our last newsletter, we held a public meeting with Amarillo, TX residents to hear firsthand their vision of Amarillo's future. We had a blast hosting  Page, Renee, and Dave from  the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce  in Austin, spending a day in our office strategizing with them (in between dining on South Congress and West 6th). We finished off this month with a trip to North Texas for a red carpet-ready mission workshop with the  North Texas Commission, which serves the 14-county Metroplex.
