My 24 Hours in Houston: Post Harvey

Fill the Truck for Houston!
(through October 5)
 
B'nai Jeshurun Congregation, along with the City of Orange, are teaming up to deliver a truckload of supplies to Houston to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. 

A truck will rotate between the synagogue parking lot and Orange Village Hall Parking Lot (located at 4600 Lander Rd.) through Thursday, October 5 from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm. Typically, the truck will be with us during the week and at Orange on weekends and holidays.  View the exact schedule on our website.
 
Items needed:
  • Nonperishable food
  • Water
  • Children's and adult clothing (new or gently used)
  • Shoes, lightweight jackets (new or gently used)
  • Underwear, men's and women's (new)
  • School supplies/backpacks/pens/pencils/crayons/ notebooks/paper/dry erase & markers
  • Medical items - wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and other hard goods
  • Children's toys (new or in boxes)
  • Toiletries:  toilet paper, diapers, wipes, personal hygiene items
  • Pet supplies
  • Small furniture items, cots w/mattresses
  • Religious items, including prayer books of all faiths
  • Storage containers/bins
  • Dishes, utensils, including paper and plastic

Mo Farunia, assistant director of development of VeloSano  Philanthropy Institute at the Cleveland Clinic, will tell us  what they're doing with the monies raised and answer  questions on their latest cancer research projects.

Paul Landis: Eyewitness to a
President's Assassination
Sunday, October 8 * 2 pm * Dessert Reception

Mr. Landis served our nation for several  years as a Secret Service Agent. His  assignments included protecting President  Eisenhower's grandchildren, the White  House Detail, the Caroline & John Jr.  "Kiddie Detail" as well as guarding First  Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. He witnessed  President Kennedy's assassination from the Secret Service  car right behind the President. He continued to guard  Mrs. Kennedy, but after six months, with the memories of
Dallas still fresh in his mind, he submitted his resignation.  Over 40 years of relative silence followed, and now over 50  years later, he is willing to share some of those memories,  both pleasant and sad.

Jr. Kadima Opening Event

All 4th - 5th graders and their Jewish friends are welcome to join us at Golfland/BA Sweeties for putt-putt and then Mitchell's Ice Cream.* The bus will leave BJC at noon and return to Mitchell's (La Place) at 2:30 pm. $10 for Jr. Kadima members; $20 for non-members.

Consecration Round-Up

Calling all first grade students and their parents.  Explore our connection to the Torah and create covers  for the mini-Torahs that students will receive at the  Consecration ceremony on Sunday, October 22.
 
 
Sushi in the Sukkah
Sunday, October 8 * 7 pm

Chef Heinz Yee, owner of Otani,  will lead an interactive and handson
demonstration of how to  make sushi. Everyone will create  their own sushi dishes. Chef Yee  has been in the restaurant industry since 1999 and he
was involved in opening Cleveland's first sushi bar in  1978. Since then, he has opened five locations with the  newest one opening on Euclid Ave (in the old NoodleCat  location). He has been involved in kosher sushi for the  past three years. $18 per person by September 26/$25  after. RSVP by October 2 so we  have plenty of food for everyone!
