In the Beechgrove Garden, after all the rain Jim is finally managing to get growing in the main veggie plot. Meanwhile George and Carole take another look at George's secret, undercover show veg to see how they are faring after their snowy start off.

George and Carole are also setting up a trial to compare growing French Beans and Sweetcorn. Carole will be growing them in Beechgrove, George in his allotment in the tropics of Edinburgh. Will 120 miles south make any difference to the success or is it the skill of the gardener?

George is also with Jacqui Ritchie in Edinburgh who has a square of approx 8m x 8m where there used to be a vigorous lilac tree. Jacqui is now left with a root which she doesn't know how to get out Jacqui would like to have a veg patch instead so her daughter can learn about growing veggies. George grinds out the root using a root grinder and then establishes a set of U shaped raised veggie beds.

Carole is visiting Alex Reynolds who owns Pretty Ugly Plants - featuring carnivorous plants particularly Sarracenias. Alex is exhibiting at Gardening Scotland (next week) for the first time. He would like gardeners to discover that growing carnivorous is just as easy as other perennials and what he says is - if you fancy a hardy perennial, with marginal tendencies, which eat flies, then these are your plants. We will catch up with him at Gardening Scotland next week to see how he gets on.

The whole Beechgrove team will be taking a break from the garden to be at Gardening Scotland, sometimes called the Chelsea of the north, it is certainly the biggest gardening show north of the border.

Gardening Scotland 2012, will burst into bloom at the Royal Highland Showground, Ingliston, just outside Edinburgh on 1st, 2nd and 3rd June. With over 150 stands in the Floral hall, the cream of British growers will be there, including those showing off their gold medals straight from last week's Chelsea, but Beechgrove will be, as ever, concentrating on the Scottish talent and Scottish plants and we'll join them all for a sneak preview as well as sampling the atmosphere of the show itself.

Firm show favourites return, alongside a host of new exhibitors, with everything from pansies to pelargoniums, and cacti to clematis in a stunning floral frenzy.

Outside, stunning show gardens with inspiration for everyone no matter what your budget. And with the tiniest of budgets, first timer entries to the show often start off creating a small but perfectly formed "pallet gardens". Last year there was a record number of these inspirational wee gems of gardens, that do exactly what they say on the tin and create a garden on a pallet. Although the gardens are tiny the enthusiasm is massive. Jim, Carole, Lesley, George and Carolyn will be at Gardening Scotland all weekend.
