Community Garden Plots Available
First Come, First Served
Take advantage of the new Blue Springs Community Garden that will be available for planting this March. The Community Gardens are located in Central Park, at the corner of Walnut and 10th Streets. This is a great way to grow your own vegetables and herbs, and get some exercise with your friends and neighbors. For just $50 a season, you can 'reap what you sow' from March 17 until October 31. Plots may be shared by more than one person/family.
The Kansas City Master Gardeners will be conducting periodic classes for anyone interested in learning more about the gardening process. A limited number of 10' x 10' spots are still available on a first come, first served basis. To claim your spot, visit the Parks & Recreation Department at your earliest convenience so you don't lose out of this fun, educational, and family oriented activity. |

Roscoe Righter named 2011 Outstanding Citizen
Roscoe Righter was named 2011 Outstanding Citizen at the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce 50th Anniversary Awards Banquet, Jan 27, 2012.
Recently retired, Roscoe started his career with the City of Blue Springs in 1979 as the City's first Parks & Recreation Director. He and the first City Administrator worked toward establishing a formal department in the early 1980's. As the City grew from 20,000 to 53,000 there were seven parks consisting of 167 acres of land; today there are nineteen parks consisting of 816 acres of land with numerous recreation programs and services.
In addition to building a highly utilized and widely recognized parks system, Roscoe also served as the liaison to the City's Public Art Commission. With his guidance, goals for the provision and promotion of public art have been surpassed with 36 art pieces displayed throughout the city.
The legacy of his contributions in Blue Springs lives on and can be seen in and experienced through the City's celebrated parks and programs. His signature and unique flavor is even visible in park signs, as he has designed most of them. Each sign identifies the uniqueness of the particular park. He hand-built the 30 different bird houses strategically placed at Adams Pointe Golf Club. Roscoe has initiated or supported many of the department's signature recreation programs including the Mighty Mud Volleyball Tournament, Youths Sports Expo, Barbeque Blaze-Off and the Blue Springs City Theatre. He is leaving a legacy here in Blue Springs that our community can be proud of and enjoy for years to come. |
