One of the landscape plants hardest hit by last summer's drought was azaleas. They are still a good choice for Houston gardens -- it just reinforces the need for proper planting and care. If we take a look at the azaleas that fared well, we would see that they were planted in soil enriched with lots of compost or peat moss, their roots were covered with a healthy layer of mulch and they were watered -- not daily, but thoroughly at least once or twice a week in the summer. So, don't ban azaleas from your garden because of one lousy summer. Houston loves azaleas -- and if we treat them lovingly, they provide a dazzling show every spring!
