Dear G ardeners, Mothers Day is this Sunday, and as we have been reminding you, it's good to give flowers -- not just for Mothers Day, but any day! If your mom is within flower-giving range, what could say "Love" better than beautiful gardenias in bloom. Hydrangeas and roses are plentiful and full of flowers. Ready-made container gardens, lush foliage houseplants -- maybe bring her with you and let her choose? Our Container Designer, Paula Mabrey is leading Saturday's Container Workshop -- There's still time to reserve your space. It's a hands-on workshop where she will help you design and plant an herb garden with ideas and combinations that work. It will be fun! The workshop is free -- you buy the pot, plants & soil. Pop into the Bungalow for books, trinkets, home fragrance, garden gadgets and birding accessories -- get Grab-N-Go orchids there, too. What would a Buchanan's employee give Mom? We have assembled some of their ideas here. Our Perennial of the Week is Salvia - there are SO many varieties of this plant genus that do well in our gardens. Even the herb, sage, is in this group. We can't list all the salvia varieties here, but a few that stand out are: autumn sage, indigo spires, and one we have not seen in a while, Salvia buchananii. It was not named after me or anyone I know, but it is a pretty cool plant with dark foliage and velvety magenta blooms. All salvias on special this week in 1-gallon pots for $6.99 each (reg. $8.99) and 4-inch plants now just $2.49 each (reg. $2.99). Dan and I just got back from a quick trip to London. It's still pretty cold there, but we did see the sun once or twice. We didn't go expressly to see gardens, but the British are avid gardeners and we saw lots of flowering shrubs and trees -- Lilacs were everywhere! We played tourist, visiting Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Oxford on our most ambitious day. We like to tour very casually, planning (or not) as we go, taking the Tube, double-decker bus and a boat -- finding our way from one meal to the next! Peaceful gardening!
