HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hope you had a lovely, relaxing break!

2017 has started off with a welcome contribution from the Beach Hotel of $1770! Thank you!

The film making workshop is underway and we still have spots available in all the workshops. (Details below).

Street Cruise has been very busy with many young people home for the holidays. Lovely to catch with many of them and hear their stories. The CBD has been extremely busy with Falls Festival and School Holidays so lots of opportunities to remind young people of harm minimisation strategies and staying safe.

We are encouraging community members to join our volunteer program to assist us in admin, fundraising, Byron Flea Market, grant writing, social media, housekeeping, garden maintenance and overall general duties around the YAC and the Mullumbimby Cottage. Contact Berri on 0417 332 465 or email [email protected]

Once again we are offering the Hospitality/Events management course to our young people aged 16 to 24,  made possible by the generous donation from the Flannery Foundation.  (See flyer below for details).

DOCS EIPP program including groups and case management will restart in the school term.

We're looking forward to expanding our programs even more in 2017 and welcome all donations that will help us achieve our goals.

From all of us @ BYS

MULLUMBIMBY COTTAGE

Sometimes youth workers have the privilege of working with a whole family and supporting each young person to achieve their goals. The end of 2016 was a time of celebration and heartwarming to see all family members coming together at the school farewell!

Please go to youtube to see the clever and creative claymation  project by Mullumbimby girls group, Year 9. Thanks to Dale for her creative abilities.

Work & Development Order (WDO)
The Work and Development Order (WDO) Scheme is an initiative that offers vulnerable young people (aged 12-24) the opportunity to clear outstanding fines with activities at the Byron Youth Service like unpaid/volunteer work, counselling, & participation in courses or programs.
WDOs are available to anyone who is homeless or in acute financial hardship, as well as people living with mental illness, intellectual disability, cognitive impairment or serious addiction.
Byron Youth Service is working together with Legal Aid NSW and the Aboriginal Legal Service (NSW) to link eligible clients with the program.

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR BYRON YOUTH THEATRE

Woodford Folk Fesitval provided a fantastic end to 2016 and beautiful start to 2017 with Jess Lu and Georgia Conechado assisting Director Lisa Apostolides in "Try a Little BYT" workshops in the children's festival.  Feedback from kids and parents proved that BYT can touch the hearts and minds of everyone.  " This has been the best start to every day, my daughter and I will definitely come again and so wish we had something like this where we live" : commented one Dad
Our mornings with the kids not only prepped me for the day, but it was beautiful to see each kid's face brighten with a smile. It got ve ry warm at times, but it was totally worth the time we spent with them, and I feel as though we helped enrich their experience of Woodford" shares Jess.

BYT members are preparing for a MEGA year in 2017.  First will be a video project made possible by a Small Change grant from Byron Council gained by Tilka Fosmale.  The video will feature a range of Byron teenagers making comments about "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" of growing up in Byron Bay.
Commencing in February will be the Youth suicide prevention project called " Here Today".  BYT will connect with local and national health and education organisations such as headspace, ACON, Beyond Blue, Department of Health, and the Australian Suicide Prevention Foundation to create a two part production including Forum Theatre and workshops.  This has been funded by Country Arts Support program Regional Arts NSW and Northern Rivers Community Foundation.

BYT are already booked to deliver another 6 performances at the Positive Adolescent Sexual Health ( PASH) conference in June and their stellar production "Broken" on domestic and family violence looks like it may be picked by a larger organisation and become part of regional training program.

Byron Youth Theatre will be the recipients of Nudge Nudge fundraising event on FEBRUARY 5th at the Billinudgel Pub which will go towards the Youth Suicide prevention production as well as getting "Broken" ready for the next round of performances.

We deeply appreciate any and all support the community can offer.
