COAST4U Quarterly
Greetings,

As the weather warms and the days lengthen, nature beckons. Time to dip your toes in and bask in the beauty of the California coast -- a fter all, it's YOUR coast and it is spectacular. To quote  Coastal Commission Access Manager  Linda Locklin; "I have been to many coasts in the world and there is nothing like the California coast."  Here at the commission, we want everyone to experience and connect with the coast, and to this end provide grants to organizations that work with students and others who may not otherwise have these opportunities. Read on to learn about this work and how you can be a part of it.

What donations to the Protect Our Coast & Oceans Fund DO

Donations to the Protect Our Coast & Oceans Fund go to the Whale Tail grants program, which supports coastal education and marine stewardship projects with an emphasis on reaching underserved communities.  For example, some of these donations are funding participants in this year's Kids' Adopt-A-Beach program, combining presentations in school with cleanups on the beach:

Friends of the Dunes will teach 800 kids from underserved and inland areas of Humboldt County about dune ecosystems and bring them for a beach cleanup and dune restoration event.

Fresno Chaffee Zoo is educating 200 students from Fresno about their connection to the ocean and negative impacts of pollution and taking the students all the way to Monterey Bay.

Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education will bring 4,000 kids from under-resourced schools in LA County to Dockweiler Beach to put their pollution prevention lessons into action.
For examples of other project types,  Guided Discoveries  will purchase a beach wheelchair, uniquely designed to be pushed across the sand, to offer to visitors at the Catalina Island Marine Institute (Toyon Bay) and elsewhere on the island.
And the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History will be putting on a variety of new, creative public programs highlighting climate change science and solutions.

Whale Tail Dollars at Work

Pacifica Beach Coalition (PBC) recently received a Whale Tail grant to provide public education and beach cleanup activities in San Mateo County. Already an Adopt-A-Beach organizer PBC will now lead volunteer cleanups at Montara State Beach, Gray Whale Cove, and Tunitas Creek Beach.
The organization will host other public events this year, including a four-part lecture series at Sharp Park Library with speakers from local marine groups, aquariums, and colleges. On April 23rd, PBC will host " Earth Day of Action "; In the morning, over 7,000 volunteers will clean up the community and in the afternoon, they will welcome  dozens of environmental booths and family activities  for  "EcoFest" to raise awareness about the impact we have on the ocean and the broader environment. Pacifica Beach Coalition receives funding through its fiscal sponsor, Pacifica's Environmental Family.
