January is Environmental Justice Month!

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Be Spartan Green is focusing on Environmental Justice this month. Environmental Justice aims to make sure everyone enjoys the same degree of protection from environmental and health hazards, as well as equal access to the decision-making process to have a healthy environment.

Urban Green Strategies Seminar, January 19Urban Green Strategies poster

On Thursday, January 19 at 7:30 p.m., Be Spartan Green will be hosting a seminar on campus with guest speaker, MSU alumnus Brandon Knight. Knight works for Global Exchange where he developed the Green Economy Leadership Training Program in Highland Park, Michigan, which equips participants with the knowledge, attitude and technical skills to create a career in the green economy.

At the event he will share his strategies for building a new economy in Michigan. From his experience working in the urban farming and renewable energy fields, Knight will explore scalable models and projects that are helping to change the landscape of Detroit. His vision includes plans on how we can solve economic inequity, unemployment and environmental degradation through community projects that build a more democratic society.

Be Spartan Green challenges all Spartans to engage in actions to develop ways to reduce, reuse & recycle, research & reeducate, redesign, and rethink.
Featured R: Rethink
Going green often starts with rethinking your purchases. Consider the story behind the product before buying, keeping in mind the materials and the people that made the product. Consider organic, fair-trade, and items made in an eco-friendly way compared to the alternatives. The fair-trade coffee at Sparty's Cafes, for example, ensures that the workers are given a living wage for their labor.
