Central OAC to participate in historic summit on veterans and homelessness

Central OAC has been invited to participate in an event that the US Dept of HUD describes as a historic gathering of government agencies and nonprofits for collaboration on the needs of veterans.  In partnership with the Veterans Administration and the United Way, HUD has called a two-day strategic working session in Atlanta to explore and identify opportunities and challenges to increase affordable housing opportunities for low-income and homeless veterans.

Central OAC recently received a grant to provide services that are currently limited or unavailable to veterans who are recovering from homelessness. Adam Seeley, Assistant Director of Outreach Services, oversees Central OAC's new veterans program and will lead a presentation during

the summit on the role nonprofit organizations can play in improving services for homeless veterans.

Later this fall, Central OAC will hold a kick-off event formally announcing our new crisis programs for vets. In the meantime, we are honored to be selected to participate in a leadership role in the summit.

Hosted by Hands Around the Hill, this year the theme is Italian food; a selection of appetizers, pastas, entres and desserts will be prepared by members of each Central Presbyterian Church and The Shrine.

The event will include tastes of the various foods and wines to complement them. Talented members of the two Churches will also perform during the evening interspersed between a live auction.

Tickets for the evening are $35 pre-sale or $40 at the door; tickets for those not wanting to drink wine are $30. Baby-sitting will be provided for an additional charge.

Central OAC welcomes new YAV/DOOR Intern

Central OAC has added a second year-long intern through the Young Adult Volunteer program of the Presbyterian Church (USA)-DOOR. Traditionally, we have had only one year-long intern but, through the generosity of one of our supporting foundations, we have been able to add a second intern for 2011-12.

Our new addition is Thomas Guthrie. Thomas is a native of Tallahassee, Florida, and is a member of First Presbyterian Church Tallahassee. He graduated from Florida State University with a double major in Business and Hospitality Administration . After graduation, he was hired by Hyatt Hotels and completed their management training program.

"At the completion of my management training program I decided to take a different path. I've always thought about working in ministry since I served as an assistant Christian educator at First Presbyterian during college."

According to Thomas, he selected Atlanta and Central OAC for his internship because of the diversity of the city. Also, he had volunteered with the homeless shelter in Tallahassee and wanted to work with a larger and more established organization.

"I am very excited to be living in an intentional community this year with the other YAV's and doing mission work throughout Atlanta. I hope this year helps guide me to the right career path!"
