The Good News
from the Christ Child Society of Summit

September 2010

Dear Christ Child Members,
summer camp

As we slowly ease back into our school routine with our children (which most of us I know are  quite happy about) it's time to get back on board with the Christ Child chapter.  There are so many good things to report. The school supply drive was a HUGE success this year thanks to the leadership of our co-chairs Gery McKenna, Mary Kull and Beth Tully.  Those that helped with the supply distribution at the end of August know how rewarding it was to see the children with a bag full of supplies as well as a new backpack.  It was a great joint effort with Bridges.

As we say goodbye to board members Gery McKenna and Ann Marvin, we welcome our new board members  Marybeth Robb ,VP Communications and Lori White, Secretary.  Next week Maura Perier, Kathryn Colao, and I will be off to the National Christ Child Convention in Cleveland.  It's such a wonderful way for us to network and gather ideas for our chapter. More importantly, we will officially be chartered as a full fledged chapter!  While it seems like a long time coming, it has been a journey that has brought so much fulfillment to me personally.  I couldn't be happier with the group of women who are involved with and continue to do so much for the chapter.

And finally, in the words of Erma Bombeck-

"Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect the nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another."

School Supplies Drive:  Give to Learn, Learn to give!
school supplies
We are thrilled to report that the 3rd annual School Supplies Drive was a huge success. This year we provided free school supplies, including brand new backpacks, to 310 Summit school children ranging from preschool through high school. We nearly doubled the amount of supplies collected and distributed from last year.

The actual collection began in late April with bins of goods collected at each of the Summit schools. We also had collection locations at two of the chairpersons houses, the YMCA, the Connection and St. Teresa's. For the first time, we partnered with Bridges Outreach in our efforts over the summer and it turned out to be an even bigger success. Through their own fundraising and grants, Bridges secured 500 new backpacks to provide to needy school children in Summit and the remainder went to surrounding area towns.

Dr. Parker, the school board and various principals were thrilled with the results of the distribution that took place on August 26th and 27th. Extra supplies were delivered to each school office to use over the school year. The children were so excited to receive their CCS bag at the door and begin their shopping spree, and everybody, including the parents, left with smiles and big thank yous.

We could not have done it without all of YOUR donations and support.  We especially want to thank the following members who helped with the distribution in August:  Lucy Remus, Lisa O'Hearn, Tracy Stabler, Michelle Cohen, Jane Murphy, Marianne De Santis, Lori White, Christine Galiardo, and Eileen Rath. THANK YOU!!
