Testimonials

I am proud of the reputation I have built over the years teaching and helping others become better photographers and artists. If you have had a workshop from me and enjoyed it please feel free to send me your thoughts. If you thought I came up short in some way please contact me and let me know so I can become a better teacher.

Here are some testimonials from recent workshops:

Bev and I both think this trip, like the one we took with you to Newfoundland, was among our best ever.  The common aspect was that they weren't strictly photo workshops.  They were also trips that explored people and places that we were curious about and wanted to investigate.  The multifaceted nature of both experiences added to the depth of our enjoyment.
You did a great job.  Thank you.
Kevin H.

"This was the best way to spend a 3-day weekend! I learned so much about doing long exposures & using filters. Gorgeous scenery, great group of participants & super instructors. I returned to work on Monday morning very bleary eyed & sleep deprived, but would do it again! Thanks guys!"
Ellen E.

"Big thank you to John and Christian! I had such a blast, your workshop was well worth my caffeine deprived early mornings! I learned a ton and feel my photography skills, and my legs, are a little stronger after this weekend!"
Kate S.

Split Rock Beacon

Dear,

This winter has started with a rush and there seems to be no let up in sight. My exhibit is up at Tettegouche State Park Visitors Center and the artist's opening and talk is this Friday January 29, from 7-9pm, my talk begins at 7:30pm. This event is free and open to the public. I hope you can make it.

Ely Folk School has asked me to teach a winter photography workshop. It will be a one day event on February 20, based at their facility in Ely. For more information check out: Ely Folk School.

The Moonrise Over Split Rock weekend this last week was a blast. Although the moon was a no show Lee Radzak the lighthouse keeper turned the light on for us both Friday as well as Saturday--that meant the participants had two nights to shoot a very rare event--light beacon and stationary in the winter! On Saturday we about 100 photographers that turned out for the lighting of the beacon.

Both of the Winter Wonderland workshops have one spot remaining. Go to:
Winter Wonderland Concept to Print
Winter Wonderland Art of the Camera
for details.

Spring will be upon us before we know it. I am planning a busy May. The first weekend of May I'll be heading down to Oxbow Park near Rochester for my Spring Ephemerals of The Big Woods workshop, upon completion of that workshop I am planning a 3 week road trip to the Oregon Coast,  the Palouse region of Washington State, and the Idaho Rockies, if you want to follow my adventures make sure you go to my ColdSnap Facebook Page and click on "get notifications", I'll be making daily posts of what I find there.

There are 4 spots remaining in the Palouse Workshop.

Several people have already viewed my exhibit at Tettegouche and commented on my print presentation in the exhibit. (I take great pride in completing all aspects of my printing, presentation, and framing. I thought I'd include a tutorial on how to deckle a print with this newsletter.

If you get up north drop me a line to see if I'll be around--I'd love to meet with you over a cup of coffee or tea. I hope your coming year is filled with joy and good light!

Sincerely,
John Gregor
How To Deckle A Print

This tutorial will cover how to deckle a print. Prints must be made on a rag or fine art type of paper in order to deckle properly. Images printed on photo type papers will not tear properly for the deckle.

You will need:
Clean work table with a smooth cutting surface.
Ruler
Utility Knife
Heavy Straight Edge (mine is a 42 inch stainless steel variety--well worth the cost!)

First mark the width of your border by measuring and piercing the paper with a sharp utility knife, in the example above I am making a 2 inch border.

Notice the pierce in the paper above. Mark all 4 borders in this manner.

Flip the print over so the image is face down. You will notice there are 8 small punctures in the paper.

Align your straight edge along these marks on one of the borders.

Grab the paper and begin to tear. Notice that I am keeping my fingers close the where the tear is--this keeps the torn edge uniform.

Once you have completed tearing all the borders you'll notice that there is a slight ridge that follows the tear. This is caused by the contact with the straight edge.

Flip the print back over and you'll notice the ridge is not visible.

Our finished deckled print.
