The College of St. Scholastica - Health Information Management
We're set to shut the doors on 2016, a year of change and success for the College of St. Scholastica.  In the past year we've welcomed a new Dean of the School of Health Sciences, a new CSS President, and the first graduates of our Masters in Health Informatics program. Students earned numerous scholarships and awards; faculty members published books and presented in many venues; a faculty emeritus named MHIMA distinguished member.  By any measure, 2016 exceeded expectations, and we have high hopes for 2017.
As you come together with loved ones during this holiday season, know that we in the department are thankful for all of you, our extended family of friends and alumni. We cherish your ongoing support and engagement.

Personally, I'm looking forward to time on the ice rink and sledding hill with my family during winter break. Hopefully you have equally exciting plans, or at least time for a bit of relaxation. Remember to drop us a line anytime to let us know how you're doing. Happy holidays!

Cheers!

Ryan

Shaw earns PHD
CSS alumna Pat Shaw, the current  Chair, HIM Program Director, and Associate Professor, Health Administrative Services at Weber State University earned her Doctorate  of Education, Education Technology and E-Learning, 2016 from Northcentral University, defending her dissertation, " The Relationship between Education Delivery Format and Program Outcomes  Summary:  Assessment of educational outcomes is a vital component of delivering successful higher education" in September 2016.

From Pat: This assessment provides information to students, parents, employers, government policy-makers, and other interested parties about the effectiveness of the institution or program. As degree programs transition to offering coursework online, there may be a period of time when students cannot take all courses in one delivery format or the other (i.e., all online or all on-campus). How this mixed course delivery format affects program outcomes is unknown. This quantitative correlational study examined the full-degree program outcomes of graduates from online and on-campus educational delivery in an associate-degree health information management (HIM) program using the following measures: a) Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification examination scores, b) program graduates' perception of competency, and c) employer's perception of graduates' competency.Time from graduation was significantly correlated to the HIM course delivery format rate (H-DFR), and time to employment was significant for the required course delivery format rate (RC-DFR). It was found that the delivery format rates were not a good predictor of program outcomes for this associate-degree HIM program. This study was limited by its small sample but may serve as a pilot for further research to continue the investigation of how educational delivery format affects program outcomes. A larger sample may yield different results and can continue to expand our knowledge about online education delivery.

Wow! Congratulations!
