The College of St. Scholastica - Health Information Management
Onward and Upward!
As spring unfolds around the College of St. Scholastica, there is excitement and change in the air.  We are sorry to see Dr. Larry Goodwin leave his post as President, but look forward to collaborating with our new leader. The college's focus on inclusive excellence will continue to serve as a guiding principle, and we embrace the ideal. In the HIIM department, our reach starts in Duluth and extends across the country (and globe!) as our students and alumni display a great diversity in their backgrounds. The many voices make for a rich HIIM story. Mentioning voices, the HIIM department is expanding ours with social media presences on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Follow us to stay connected, network, and add to the discussion!

Cheers!

Ryan

Con gratu lations to HIIM Faculty
Dr. David Marc
Congrats to Dr. David Marc, who successfully defended his dissertation in February 2016.  Well done on this wonderful accomplishment!

Kudos to Dr. Amy Watters and Dr. Danika Brinda on their successful promotions to Associate Professor. This is a major achievement, and reflects their level of scholarship, service, and teaching excellence! Congratulations!
My Health ID Initiative
AHIMA, a national organization of health information management professionals, has started an online petition to the White House to encourage our leaders to discuss a system where patients can be quickly and accurately identified. Faculty Member Danika Brinda joined the National Board of Directors this year. The ID will make healthcare safer and more effective. AHIMA wants to spread the message that "After all, only you are you." The goal is to collect 100,000 signatures in 30 days on the White House's "We the People" website. The campaign begins March 20 and will run through April 19, and needs 100,000 signatures to guarantee a written response. More information can be found here
Polished Publications from HIIM Faculty
Faculty member Dr. Danika Brinda published an article in the January edition of the Journal of AHIMA, titled "Shifting from Reactive to Proactive HIPAA Audits".  Congratulations, Danika!

The Journal of HIMSS from Summer 2015 included an article from Janelle Walpola and Ryan Sandefer with Sarah Tupper.  "Meaningful Use Audits: An Interprofessional Approach" includes  the applied experiences of an interprofessional team with expertise in Meaningful Use audit preparation. It also describes process and tools for assisting organizations (inpatient and ambulatory) and reports common findings. The article can be found here

Giving to Sr. Loretta Scholarship Fund
As an instructor, educating the students for their future as a HIM professional meant a great deal to Pat.  One way the HIIM Department is able to promote and encourage continuing student education is through the Sr. Loretta Scholarship.  The Sr. Loretta Scholarship is offered to undergraduate and graduate students to assist in the funding of their education.

As chair of the Scholarship Committee, I am requesting that donations to the scholarship fund be made this year in honor of Pat English and her dedication to HIM students and the profession.
