Community Vision and Our Home, Inclusive Community Collaborative Partner on Homeownership Project

 It's celebration time -- Community Vision recently purchased property on North Edison Street near the St. Johns Bridge. We will be supporting Our Home, which is a project by the Inclusive Community Collaborative (ICC) to develop 12 homeownership opportunities. There will be a mix of market-rate and subsidized homeownership units that include zero-percent second mortgages.
The goal of our partnership with Our Home, ICC is to create a diverse pocket neighborhood community consisting of families who have the opportunity for homeownership and include individuals often seen as at-risk, such as the elderly, people who experience disability and people below median income. This community will be based on strengths, interests and shared values rather than deficits and needs, and the projected completion date is fall 2017. All societies need to address the questions surrounding how we build neighborhoods that embrace the diversity of our elders, our community members with disabilities and those with lower income and how we thrive together in these neighborhoods. Community Vision and Our Home, ICC will be gathering potential owners and neighbors for a visioning session soon. We've moved away from hometowns and extended family. We've moved our families from city centers to the suburbs. We leave our neighbors on the outside by going from garage to house, eschewing the front porch. We've moved our elderly, our people with low incomes and those with disabilities into developments, facilities and group homes, segregating and grouping based on needs and deficits. Support CVI's Programs by Joining Us at the May 21 Vision on the Green Golf Tournament

Community Vision's annual "Vision on the Green" -- an exciting day of golf, food and fun -- will be held at Langdon Farms on Thursday, May 21.
Come learn about Community Vision's upcoming plans and new developments. Registration for the golf tournament is $150 per person or $525 for a foursome. The tournament is a four-person scramble, and all proceeds will benefit Community Vision's programs.

Job Search Spotlight: Meet Jonathan, Whose Ideal Position is in a Retail or Dance Setting
|
|
|
Meet our newest job seeker, Jonathan. Jonathan is an exuberant person who is looking for a job and is thrilled to work! He loves meeting new people and has experience greeting and directing customers and interacting with children, among other skills.
Jonathan has had several work experiences. In his most recent position at Tree Hill Day Care. Jonathan got a chance to interact with and help preschool children learn from play and creative activities. Even though Jonathan did well, he understood that working in that setting wasn't conducive to his schedule -- a schedule that would allow him to reach his overall goal of being a hip hop dance instructor.
Jonathan is passionate about dancing. Through a work experience with Polaris Dance Theater, Jonathan learned that he would need a vast amount of experience to reach his goal. That news promoted Jonathan to register at Mt. Hood Community College with the goal of obtaining a degree in performing arts. He is currently choreographing two hip hop dance routines while attending two hip hop dance classes in addition to juggling his courses at Mt. Hood Community College.
Jonathan is far from being a static character. He would love to work in a retail or dance setting but is open to any creative ideas. When asked whether he would feel overwhelmed by working and going to school simultaneously, his response was: "Oh yeah -- it's possible, but I'm not going to stop until I reach my goal." Job Search Spotlight: Meet Teela, Who is Interested in a Retail or Grocery Position
|
|
|
In preparation for her job search, Teela recently completed an assessment at Birch Community Services. Birch serves more than 930 working-poor families annually and has more than 150 community partners who donate food, clothing and footwear.
At Birch, Teela worked in the kitchen packaging pasta and green beans. She also sorted clothing and worked in a role called the "meat fairy," in which she used a checklist to track shoppers' items in the meat department. Teela said the experience was both fun and rewarding, knowing she was helping people.
Teela is using this experience to propel her forward in her job search. She's looking primarily for a job in retail or grocery -- "especially sorting baby clothes," she says, though her strength in learning new jobs quickly and her eye for detail will be assets in any job.

Follow the Oregon Developmental Disabilities Coalition for News on Pending Legislation

|
With a number of proposed bills in the Oregon state legislature that would affect funding for disabled services, it can be hard to stay on top of all of the news and issues. We'd like to encourage you to follow the Oregon Developmental Coalition by signing up for its newsletter.
The coalition's GO! Project provides an information clearinghouse on state DD issues by maintaining the Oregon DD Coalition website and related materials as well as sending out email bulletins. GO! is also building a strong network of Oregonians concerned with issues related to people with developmental disabilities through grassroots organizing and training activities.
