Showing of 100 Voices
The very successful film about the Cantors Assembly mission to Poland, 100 Voices, will be shown at the Drexel Theater on Tuesday, January 31, at 7:30 pm. The movie is entertaining and moving and will give you a sense of what's in store for those who join us on next summer's amazing Germany trip.
Tifereth Israel Blood Drive
Join us Sunday, February 12 from 9 am-1 pm for our next blood drive. Bring your friends and your teenagers (17 yrs of age are eligible) with you. 12 Voices of the Generations Grade 6-8
Parents are invited to attend "Voices of the Generations" with speaker and author, Julie Kohner on Sunday February 12 at Tifereth Israel at 11 am. This engaging family program is a moving love story, introducing the Holocaust, a challenging time in Jewish history, in an age appropriate manner. Julie Kohner is a second generation survivor of the Holocaust and she tells her family's unique story of survival against all odds. D'var Torah
Parashat Bo picks up in the midst of the Ten Plagues in Egypt. Last week, in Va-era, we read about the first seven, and this week we find the descriptions of the final three.
It is noteworthy that God commanded Moses-who then relayed the information to the Israelites-how to prepare for the final plague. For all the other plagues, the Israelites only needed to sit tight; the Egyptians were smitten, while the Hebrews remained untouched in their territory. The tenth plague, the death of the first-born, however, is in a class all by itself. The preparations served in a way to highlight the importance of what was about to happen. There was no way our ancestors could have not known that something big was on its way.
For all the terror and impact of the tenth plague, this was really the birth pangs of the Exodus. Our ancestors still had to pack up their things, make their way to the Sea of Reeds, cross on dry land and make their way to Mt. Sinai. All the instructions leading up to that fateful (and fatal) night in Egypt, served as a kind of omen of what was to lay ahead in the future.
To this day, we mimic many of the preparations of that first Passover night in our own Passover preparations and Seders. Each year we are reminded of the price of freedom, and of our responsibility to fight for it. Although Passover is still off in the distance a few months away, soon we will begin the special Shabbatot leading up to it, and we will get a sense not only of the significance of the holiday but also of just how precious our liberty is.

A husband looking through the paper came upon a study that said women use more words than men. Excited to prove to his wife his long-held contention that women in general, and his wife in particular, talked too much, he
showed her the study results, which stated:
"Men use about 15,000 words per day, but women use 30,000."
His wife thought awhile, then finally she said to her husband, "That's because we have to repeat everything we say."

Yom Hashoah Observance Part of this year's Yom Hashoah observance will include a video competition for students in grades 7-9 and 10-12. The winning entries will receive a price of $250 and their video will be screened at the Yom Hashoah program at Tifereth Israel on April 19. Deadline for entries is March 1, 2012. CHAVERIM (1-2nd grades) will have a WINTER FUN PARTY at Tifereth Israel on Sunday, February 5 from 12:30-2:00pm. We'll have gooey mac-n-cheese for lunch and then heat up with some hot chocolate. We'll also take part in fun winter crafts and if there's enough snow, we'll build a big snowman.

Social Action
Have you missed the collection box for the Food Pantry?
It is now located in the alcove near the Katz Chapel. The pantry always needs: (with emphasis on non-perishable items) Canned and boxed foods that contain protein, especially items that can make a meal, e.g. stews, chunky soups, "helper" type items that need one thing added, e.g. tuna helper, baby foods, small containers of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc. There is a special need for peanut butter, as the price has increased due to shortages from a recent poor peanut harvest. The pantry cannot distribute food items that have passed their expiration date. We are also collecting personal care items, toiletries, etc. (no prescription medications) to be used at shelters. There is a separate box for those items in the alcove. Please remember that personal hygiene items cannot be purchased with food stamps.
Volunteers Needed for The Manna Café
Tifereth Israel will again prepare and serve a meal Wednesday February 15, at The Manna Café run by the downtown United Methodist Church, 501 East Broad St. Free parking is available. Midreshet Israel's Melton Sampler
Save the dates for Midreshet Israel's Melton sampler; four one-hour Sunday morning lectures, each with a scholar from OSU's Melton Center for Jewish Studies. On Feb 12, Carolina Lopez-Ruiz, professor of ancient Mediterranean cultures, presents a comparative overview of Biblical and near-Eastern creation stories. Tu B'Shevat Seder
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:00 pm Hazak will be hosting a Tu B'Shevat Seder right after Minyan. A Tu B'Shevat seder is similar to a Passover seder. There are 4 questions, there are 4 cups of wine, and we follow along in the haggadah. Instead of celebrating the exodus from Egypt, however, Tu B'Shevat celebrates the new year of trees. Yad Shel Chai
Calling all Torah readers! The Men's Club wants you to have your own yad! When you have read 10 times we will present you with a yad designed by Israeli Judaica artist Yair Emanuel. The wooden Torah pointer is hand-painted using acrylic colors and three layers of lacquer. You will also receive a certificate suitable for framing! Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers. Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation. It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body. Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual. No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time. The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required. Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.

Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year. Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime! We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue. Columbus Jewish Day School Hosts 8th Annual Wisdom of the Heart
CJDS is pleased to announce that Bruce and Joy Soll will be honored at the 8th Annual Wisdom of the Heart fundraiser to be held Sunday, January 29 from 5-7 pm at the school. The Solls will be recognized for their long-standing commitment to CJDS and the Columbus Jewish community. The evening event will include a kosher buffet along with silent and live auctions. All are invited to attend and celebrate the school's unique culture and contribution to Jewish education in Columbus. Tickets start at $50.
