D'var Torah

Our Torah portion, Toledot, begins with the arrival of the infamous biblical twins:  Jacob and Esau.  They are anything but close; Jacob is favored by his mother, and Esau by his father.

Jacob, who appears to be a schemer from an early age, was able to convince (without much effort, it seems) Esau to sell him his birthright.  Esau had been out in the field all day and returned home famished.  Jacob was preparing a stew, which he offered to his brother in exchange for the birthright.  Esau, thinking that he would die if he did not eat right away, accepted the deal.  Jewish commentators point to this as proof that Esau really did not value the traditions and values of his father and grandfather.

It is also possible to learn from this incident that Esau was more concerned with the present-the here and now-with little regard for the future.  Our tradition teaches us that we must always be aware and engaged in the present, but this must be balanced with what may come in the years ahead.  Had Esau considered the ramifications of selling the birthright-even as he felt he was at the point of death-he might have chosen differently.  Likewise, in our own lives, we should be cognizant of the hasty (and sometimes rash) decisions we make in the heat of the moment; often we regret these decisions and wish we had thought them through more thoroughly.  Our Torah teaches us about life not just from the positive attributes of our ancestors, but through their shortcomings as well.

Nov. 20th Blood Drive Results

Our blood drive was very successful with the help of all of our volunteers; i.e. donor callers, registration desk personnel and snack table servers.  We had a total of 34 donors who actually had scheduled appointment. Due to illnesses and other circumstances that total was 21 who showed up. What kept our numbers up were the 13 walk-ins. The end results were 35 donors total; 4 deferred; 28 whole blood and 3 double reds.  Thanks to all of the donors for their patience! The drive cannot happen without your support.  Jill Winer, Site Coordinator

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers.  Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation.  It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body.  Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual.  No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time.  The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required.  Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.

Electronic Statements are Now Available!

Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year.  Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime!  We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue.  We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount.  Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270.  If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
