D'var Torah

This coming Shabbat we do not read from the regular Torah reading cycle because it is Yom Kippur, and holiday readings "trump" the weekly Parashah.

The Torah reading for Yom Kippur morning comes from the Book of Leviticus and describes the Atonement Rituals prescribed for the Israelites in ancient times.  Many are familiar with the ritual of the two goats.  Lots are drawn and one goat has the sins of the people placed on it; this goat is then sent out into the wilderness.  The other goat is sacrificed by the Kohanim.  It is hard for us to imagine that such a ritual can literally cleanse us of our sins; after all, are we not the same person we were before the lots are drawn, the ceremony performed and the goats sent off or sacrificed?

The same question can apply to our prayers today.  What makes us different on Saturday night as Yom Kippur ends, as opposed to Friday night when it begins?  Certainly, in between there are a lot of rituals as well as fasting, praying and "afflicting our souls."  Is that what makes us different?  Perhaps we can think of these actions as a means to an end; they help us to focus on what we need to do after Yom Kippur is over.  What we do in synagogue is not as important as what happens when we leave it.  These rituals are meant to get us to concentrate in a very focused way on how we must change ourselves and our world.  It is an annual check-up of the soul and the spirit.

If all we do is go through the motions without really working toward change, we have missed the point.  The same was true in ancient times with the rituals described in the Torah reading; the people still had to alter their behavior.  This is the only way true repentance and atonement can take place.

Gemar Chatima Tovah!  "May we all be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year!"

Rabbi Michael Ungar

Jewish Joke of the Week

Rabbi Josephs was cleaning up the house when he came across a box he didn't recognize.  His wife told him to leave it alone as it was personal.  One day, when she was out, his curiosity got the best of him.  He opened the box and inside found three eggs and $2,000.  When his wife came home, he admitted that he had opened the box and he asked her to explain the contents to him.  She told him that every time he had a bad sermon, she would put an egg in the box...

He interrupted, "In twenty years, only three bad sermons, that's not bad."

His wife continued..."and every time I got a dozen eggs, I would sell them."

Yad Shei Chai
Calling all Torah readers!  The Men's Club wants you to have your own yad!  When you have read 10 times we will present you with a yad designed by Israeli Judaica artist Yair Emanuel. The wooden Torah pointer is hand-painted using acrylic colors and three layers of lacquer.  You will also receive a certificate suitable for framing! Keep track of your readings by placing a star next to your name in the book by the entrance in the sanctuary. For more information, contact Dale Levy at dlevy82@gmail.com.  If you wish to sign up to read Torah, contact Jerry Sigal of the Yad Squad at jerrysigal@columbus.rr.com.

JFS Friendly Visitor Program

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers.  Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation.  It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body.  Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual.  No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time.  The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required.  Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.

Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year.  Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime!  We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue.  We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount.  Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270.  If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
