D'var Torah
Our Torah portion this Shabbat, Vayera, begins with the arrival of three guests at the tent of Abraham. Sarah and Abraham provide these strangers a warm welcome, and then receive the message that Sarah will bear a child in her old age.
The sages derived from this story the importance of Hachnasat Orchim-welcoming guests. For centuries it has been a Jewish practice to invite people to our homes for meals or to stay with us when they are travelling or without lodging. Even in the our modern world, this remains an important part of Judaism; it builds community and strengthens relationships.
This December, Tifereth Israel will fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim for a group of homeless women through a program at the YWCA. Because of the ongoing economic downturn, the number of homeless individuals and families continues to grow while the number of shelters and beds has remained stable. This is the first year when the Community Shelter Board predicts that there will not be enough space in community shelters, leaving some people out on the streets at the coldest time of the year. Various congregations throughout Columbus-including ours-will take turns hosting a group of about 30 women who would otherwise be on the sidewalks, on park benches or under bridges and overpasses. It will not be easy...and it may not even be pleasant, but it is one of the most important mitzvot we can perform.
If you are interested in being a part of the effort by volunteering time or helping to cover some of the costs, please be in touch with Rabbi Ungar mungar@tiferethisrael.org or Cantor Chomsky jchomksy@tiferethisrael.org, or contact anyone on the Social Action committee. It is rare that we have an opportunity to "copy" a mitzvah that was performed by Abraham, but we will do so in December and we hope to have you join us!

Jewish Joke of the Week
Shlomo goes to Dr. Lewis for a check up. After extensive tests, Dr. Lewis tells him, "I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. You only have six months to live."
Shlomo is dumbstruck. After awhile he replies, "That's terrible, doctor. But I must admit to you that I can't afford to pay your bill."
"OK," says Dr. Lewis, "I'll give you a year to live."

The wooden Torah pointer is hand-painted using acrylic colors and three layers of lacquer. You will also receive a certificate suitable for framing! Keep track of your readings by placing a star next to your name in the book by the entrance in the sanctuary. For more information, contact Dale Levy at dlevy82@gmail.com. Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers. Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation. It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body. Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual. No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time. The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required. Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.
Electronic Statements are Now Available!
Did you know you now have the ability to receive your billing statement and yahrzeit notices electronically? Help us reduce paper and postage while doing your part for the environment at the same time. Contact Cheryl Laver, Finance Manager, at claver@tiferethisrael.org and we'll make it happen. Of course, if we don't already have your email address, we certainly want that too.
Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year. Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime! We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue. We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount. Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270. If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
