D'var Torah
Parashat Miketz, our Torah portion for the week, is a continuation of the story of Joseph and his brothers. In Miketz, Joseph goes from being a prisoner in an Egyptian jail to the second highest in command in all of Egypt. He achieves this success through his ability to interpret Pharaoh's dreams and his belief in God.
The most important dream interpretation that Joseph makes is that after a seven-year period of bounty, there will be seven years of famine. It is during the famine that Joseph's brothers (the same ones who years earlier had thrown him into a pit, sold him to a passing caravan and faked his death) come to Egypt looking for provisions. Joseph is reunited with his brothers for the first time; it is a reunion that is very different from the one in the previous generation between Esau and Jacob. When the twins were reunited, it was an emotional and tearful meeting in which past anger was set aside. This reunion is quite different; in it, Joseph sees the opportunity to teach his brothers a lesson. While it may look like Joseph is merely toying with his siblings, as the story progresses we see that his actions are not motivated by anger (similar to Jacob and Esau), but rather a desire to have his brothers deal with their past so that they can move on to a better future.
The text of the Torah does not tell us a great deal about the relationship between Esau and Jacob following their twenty-year reunion, but the sages implied that their descendants never really became friends-in fact, they became enemies. In contrast, Joseph and his brothers reconcile and go on to be the basis of the twelve tribes. The lesson may be that while it is helpful to put aside anger, it is more helpful still to confront the underlying issues that gave rise to that anger in the first place. This seems to be what Joseph is orchestrating in our Torah portion this week.

Jewish Joke of the Week
Yenta had to call in the doctor to check her husband Lionel. He didn't seem to be well at all. After the doctor had examined Lionel, he said to Yenta, "Your husband is very exhausted and fatigued and needs a lot of peace and quiet. If you want to help him recover, please take one tranquilizer, four times per day."

Tu B'Shevat Seder
Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 6:00 pm Hazak will be hosting a Tu B'Shevat Seder right after Minyan. A Tu B'Shevat seder is similar to a Passover seder. There are 4 questions, there are 4 cups of wine, and we follow along in the haggadah. Instead of celebrating the exodus from Egypt, however, Tu B'Shevat celebrates the new year of trees. Volunteers are needed to help us celebrate! Please contact Judy Uhrman (614-863-0358 or artandjudy@aol.com) or Susie Covensky (614-451-6871 or scovensky@columbus.rr.com) for more information! |

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers. Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation. It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body. Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual. No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time. The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required. Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.
Electronic Statements are Now Available!
Did you know you now have the ability to receive your billing statement and yahrzeit notices electronically? Help us reduce paper and postage while doing your part for the environment at the same time. Contact Cheryl Laver, Finance Manager, at claver@tiferethisrael.org and we'll make it happen. Of course, if we don't already have your email address, we certainly want that too.

Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year. Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime! We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue.
