D'var Torah

This week the story of the Torah turns from the history of humankind to the history of the Jewish people.  With the selection of Abraham to lead a new people, Jewish history begins.

The Torah does not really mention why Abraham was chosen; that is why so many colorful stories were written to explain the choice.  Many bring up the idea that Abraham was the first monotheist, but the Torah never says that explicitly.  Although we cannot know for sure, one thing is certain about Abraham.  To use the modern business parlance, "he thought outside the box."  In a pagan world, Abraham and his descendants represented a new and revolutionary idea:  the unity and uniqueness of God.

Over the years, we have looked to Abraham as a model.  He was a man of faith, but he also questioned.  Another way that we can emulate Abraham is by "thinking outside the box."  Our community faces difficult challenges now as it has throughout our history.  The solutions are often found by looking to our past, but they can also be found by looking in new directions.  At critical times in Jewish history, rabbis and leaders made bold moves and stunning decisions (some of which seem to totally contradict the Torah); they did so in order to ensure the viability of our people and the relevance of Torah.

The challenge for us, as it was for Abraham, is to see the world as it is, think out of the box to see how it could be, and then work with each other and God to make it a reality.

Jewish Joke of the Week

Mrs. Stein, a rich tourist, goes to Paris to visit the art galleries.  She decides to hire the services of a guide to show her around the Louvre.

"Oh!" said Mrs. Stein looking at a painting, "That's a Monet isn't it?"

"No, Madame, almost, it's a Manet," replied the guide.

"And that one, it's a Pissaro?"

  "Er--no, I'm sorry, Madame, that's a Monet."

"Oh, I see.  Now that one I'm sure of--that's a Picasso isn't it?"

  "No, Madame, that's a mirror."

Chevra Kadisha
The TI Chevra Kadisha is in need to additional volunteers.  Members participate in the ritual preparation (Taharah) of the body of a deceased member of our congregation.  It consists primarily of bathing the body, then placing the burial garments on the body.  Prayers are read while the Taharah is being performed. Participation is one of the greatest mitzvot that one can perform, as the departed cannot thank those who participate in this ritual.  No medical knowledge is necessary, and one is part of a pool of people from which 5 individuals participate at a time.  The time commitment is minimal and no medical knowledge is required.  Men only participate in a Taharah for a male, and women only in Taharah for a female.

Electronic Statements are Now Available!
Did you know you now have the ability to receive your billing statement and yahrzeit notices electronically? Help us reduce paper and postage while doing your part for the environment at the same time.  Contact Cheryl Laver, Finance Manager, at claver@tiferethisrael.org and we'll make it happen.  Of course, if we don't already have your email address, we certainly want that too.

Kroger Program - Help Us Make Some Gelt!
Kroger is giving away up to $5 million to non-profit organization this year.  Let's earn our share -- it won't cost you a dime!  We have the potential to earn thousands of dollars for the synagogue.  We raised a little over $6,000 this past fiscal year, and we could easily TRIPLE that amount.  Detailed instructions are online at www.krogercommunityrewards.com or call Danny Bromberg at 237-7270.  If you already enrolled, you will need to re-enroll after April 1 of each year.
