 The Alpha

Bee's head shot

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the January 2012 edition of Denver Urban Spectrum's Connecting People 2 People eNewsletter. Did I say 2012? Where have the years gone?  Well we're excited with our 25th anniversary plans where you will see what the Spectrum has done since 1987.  We will keep you posted!

But first I want to thank everyone who came out and celebrated the New Year with DUS and The Julius Show at Jazz@Jacks! Thanks to all our media partners (Denver Post, Jammin 101.5, KUVO, Cocktail Radio, KHIGH, Dr. Daddio, Revelations, Westword, Denver Weekly News, El Semanario) and others who helped to make it successful. It was a smashing success so take a moment and check out the photos and others on our photo gallery below.

In our first 2012 Denver Urban Spectrum our cover story by Sheila Smith reviews what happened in 2011 in and around the Denver community and beyond. But also as in years past, we dedicate this January issue to the beliefs, values and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a schedule of events honoring this great civil rights leader. Sheila also shares what she learned at the E*TRADE jazzy money-wise seminar co-sponsored by the Urban League of Metro Denver where financial experts provided answers on how African-Americans can get over this recessional economic hump - through investing and better personal financial budgeting.

The January issue will be hitting the stands in a few days so be sure to pick up your copy or if you choose to read online with our other many online supporters, click here to read this month's edition.

In addition to the MLK events, there are a lot more activities starting this weekend with the Civic Summit Community Food Drive, sponsored by Cedric Pride and Rich Lewis. There's a Tax Free Retirement Workshop, the MLK Rodeo, special movie showing of Red Tails with special Tuskegee Airmen, a tribute dinner and many many concerts - including The Julius Show.

So check out the events; sit back, read and enjoy this months stories in DUS on our Website or go directly to our ePublicationAnd for those of you who want to view back issues, you can find them on the ePub's Archive Icon (top far left).

Niarah3d - The mixed expressions of symbolism and motif are qualities found in each sculptured series. Artist Deidre Hardin combines African designs with everyday Christian themes to create a series of forms reflecting the spirit within.

"My praise inspired clay sculptures are mixed media explorationsdeidre with symbolism, texture, color, and form. Working in clay has a profound healing effect for me and my sculptures are reflections of that healing.
"Mixed materials (clay, paint, textiles, found objects) combined with creativity are manipulated until they form a dynamic dance form that is both pleasing and balanced. Each sculpture is beautifully different, vibrant and colorful. I describe my work as visual virtues of praise."
