Don't Let Shin Pain Get You Down
woman-jogging.jpg Attention all you runners!
If you have been wearing a lot of sandals and have stopped or cut your running way down from the summer, beware of the most common post-summer overuse injury we see here at Dr. Lee S. Cohen Associates headquarters: "shin pain"

Shin pain can occur either on the front outside of your leg or the front inside of your leg.  They are two different forms of what is now considered an old fashion classification known as shin splints.  Pain on the outside front of your leg is due to the muscle known as the anterior tibial muscle. This is the most active muscle in the gait and running cycle.  This muscle performs many different actions in the running cycle.  When overworked, or through excessive impact, this muscle becomes inflamed and tender. Pain on the inside front of your leg is most likely related to a tight calf muscle and a straining of your arch muscle known as your posterior tibial muscle. These muscle, when overworked and excessively tight, cause pain in the inside of the leg.

There are a variety of potential risk factors detailed in the literature.  The risk factors include: younger aged athletes, females, excessive pronation (foot flattening), changes in distance, and frequency of workouts.  Other risk factors include changes in speed, running surfaces, and/ or shoe gear or a history of previous injury.  Poor body biomechanics and poor flexibility have also been heavy determinants of running injuries.

So use your head in returning to that pre-summer mileage or time you were running before ending up in a doctor's office.
Basketball Shoes

The

 Jordan Super.fly 3

uses a design which encourages explosiveness & better jumping ability due to a flight plate placed in the shoe and amplified energy retention from the Nike Zoom unit in the freeboot.  The flight web system creates a stabilizing lock down & adds support during powerful jumps and cuts.

The LeBron NSRL is a new version designed for explosiveness while combining the benefits of superior cushioning, harnessed support & natural flexibility.  Air Zoom protection is mapped to the pressure points of the foot where it is most needed for baseball performance.

The Adidas d rose 773 iii is a nice supportive shoe made from synthetic lester upper for durability & light weight.  There is adiprene in the forefoot for good cushioning, a sprint frame construction gives stability without preventing speed moves.

The Adidas Crazy Quick 2.0 has great traction for multi-directional movement.  This shoe has great forefoot cushioning and flexibility.  A stable shoe that is light weight with an internal bootie.  Nice heel padding.  Go down a half size, this is not the shoe for a wide foot.

The Under Armour Anatomix Spawn Low is a great traction shoe with good cushioning and comfort.  It is a durable and flexible shoe light weight shoe with nice support and good ventilation.

The Mizuno Wave Rally 4 is a lightweight version at only 8.8 oz, it offers nice cushioning and great ventilation to keep feet cool.

The Asics Gel Domain 2 offers good cushioning, better lateral stability than version 1 and a Rhynoskin upper that gives nice fit and can accommodate an ankle brace if needed.

The  Asics Gel Flashpoint is a breathable, lightweight and supportive shoe.  It has built in 2 layers of cushioning, great traction, and lateral support.

The Nike Volley Zoom Hyperspike is a lightweight and super supportive shoe with Flywire to lock down feet.  It offers the TPU heel counter and lateral outrigger which allows the shoe to work like a basketball shoe ensuring smooth  transitions and quick cuts.
