Mathias Ham House 48th Annual Fourth of July Ice Cream Social

The Dubuque County Historical Society's 48th annual Ice Cream Social is Wednesday, July 4, from 11 a.m.-4p.m., sponsored by U.S. Bank.

Admission is free and open to the public, but donations are welcome. Proceeds will benefit the Mathias Ham House Historic Site, a property of the Dubuque County Historical Society.

Guests can enjoy Ham House tours, live music, living history demonstrations including Civil War cannon and musket firings, and several activities for children including Victorian games, crafts and prizes throughout the day.

This holiday celebration will also have a variety of cakes and ice cream for sale as well as other favorite picnic fare including brats, hot dogs, barbeque pork, chips, soda, lemonade and popcorn.

Additional support for the Fourth of July Ice Cream Social provided by: Arctic Glacier Ice, Burger King, Hy-Vee, Pepsi, QueenB Radio, Schoeps Ice Cream, and Walmart.

Special note:
Dubuque's oldest granary is on the grounds of the Ham House. This site feature is currently under restoration due to a grant awarded by the Dubuque Racing Association. After the restoration is complete later this fall, we will provide additional educational programming and interpretation for the public. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the DRA for their generosity and support in restoring this important agricultural historical resource to make it safely accessible to the public again.

CSI: Dubuque Community Search & Investigation local history exhibit
CSI: Dubuque exhibit graphic
The Dubuque County Historical Society's new exhibit aims to answer the many mysteries and urban legends of our City's founder and namesake, Julien Dubuque.

CSI Dubuque: Community Search and Investigation is an original exhibit developed by the Historical Society that will display throughout the summer at the Old Jail Museum--a National Historic Landmark.

Visitors will have the opportunity to investigate the true history surrounding our City's founding father, Julien Dubuque, born 250 years ago this year. Artifacts, images, interactive audio, and historic documents help present the most complete picture of Dubuque's life. Visitors can examine forensic evidence, hear eyewitness accounts, and compare statements to draw their own conclusions.

CSI: Dubuque also includes the first and only scientific depiction of Julien Dubuque. The image is based on real physical evidence and was created by renowned forensic artist Karen Taylor. Taylor has collaborated with several police departments throughout the country; she is most well-known for her work with the Discovery and History Channels and on television shows like Cold Case and the CSI series.

Did Julien Dubuque really look like Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett, as we have so often seen in the past? Join the Dubuque Community Search and Investigation to find out!
