Stop Summer Brain Drain

T- minus 15 days (or so) and counting until the last day of school and endless days of fun and freedom. Let's make sure that the fun includes lots of good stories to read, because freedom doesn't mean a stop to learning. Teachers say that kids who don't read all summer may lose 2-3 months' worth of skills learned during the school year.

One of the best summer traditions is the Library Summer Reading Program. All across Greater Minnesota this year, kids will be reading under the theme "Dream Big - Read!" The teen theme for this year is "Own the Night." All of ECRL's branches and outreach stops will be participating in the summer reading program. Check with your local branch for contests and activities for all ages.

To kick off Summer Reading Program, the Schiffelly Puppets will appear at each of ECRL's 14 branch libraries. Later in the summer, catch the juggling program, In Capable Hands, at a local branch library. Wendy's Wiggle Jiggle Jam will be at all the outreach locations. Check the ECRL event calendar for times and places - http://www.ecrlib.org/calendar.html  Admission is free! All three programs are made possible with funds from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Welcome Lisa Wagner - Milaca Branch Librarian

ECRL would like to welcome new Branch Librarian, Lisa Wagner.  Lisa replaces longtime Milaca Librarian, Sharon Strack, who left ECRL for the position of Circulation Supervisor at the St. Cloud Public Library.  Lisa began her library career working at Clemens Library at the College of Saint Benedict as a Circulation Desk Assistant.  After graduating from Saint Benedict with a degree in History and Spanish, Lisa began work at the St. Cloud Public Library, working both in the distribution center and in circulation.  It was at this point that Lisa realized her dream was to become a librarian and so she pursued this path and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue her Master's Degree in Library and Information Studies.  While at the University of Wisconsin, she worked as a Student Assistant on the reference desk.  Lisa completed her studies in December 2011 and graduated with her Master's Degree.  As the new Milaca Librarian, Lisa looks forward to the challenge.  She envisions encouraging the use of new technology and promoting the importance of the library within the Milaca community and beyond.  She will also continue building local ties and seeking support from the library Friends group and volunteers.  Lisa currently resides in St. Cloud.  Lisa will began full-time at the Milaca Library on May 11, 2012.  Please make her feel welcome in her new position.
