from East Central Regional Library

ECRL's mission statement for the next 3 years is to strengthen communities by connecting people with resources, spaces, and educational experiences that enrich and empower their lives.
Every one of the 80 employees and countless volunteers who bring library service in our 14 branches and 8 outreach sites are committed to this mission. We love our jobs!

Whatever the information or educational need, citizens of the counties of Aitkin, Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine can bring it to the library via phone, email, or in person. We're also online via Facebook, Twitter, and the new online chat service - AskMN. All of these are linked from the ECRL web page at http://www.ecrlib.org/  And remember, you can find books, magazines, or chat with a librarian any time of day or night or even in the middle of a snowstorm (as long as you have electricity and internet service).

If you're making year-end gifts, please consider investing in your library. Make your tax-deductible gift by December 31st to East Central Regional Library, 244 S Birch St, Cambridge MN 55008. You may specify your gift for a specific purpose or branch if you wish, or your gift will be used to enhance our shared collections and services. You may also make your gift directly to your local Friends or library support group. However you support us, THANK YOU. And Happy Holidays to you and yours from the ECRL staff team.

                    ECRL Staff Recommendations

Complicit by Stephanie Juehn (Teen Fiction, print)
A psychological thriller for older teens sprinkled with murder, romance and mental illness issues. Once you have it figured out, the author surprises you. This is an excellent book about teen mental illness and what happens when it is not treated. Sometimes love is just not enough.

Recommended by Vickie Sorn, Youth & Community Services Librarian

Wither by Lauren Destefano (Teen Fiction, print), Book #1 in the Chemical Garden Trilogy
In a Dystopian future, every person dies between the ages of 20 and 25 due to an antidote that, in the hopes of curing all illnesses, backfired and has now threatened the existence of the human population.

Recommended by Chelsea Meyers, Cambridge Branch Aide

The Arsonist by Sue Miller (print, book on CD)
This novel is set in New England area and focuses on the  mysterious fires being set. It is, however, more of a story about family, the townspeople and how they interact. The author tells the story through the eyes of various characters.  I could especially relate to the mother and the issues she must face as a mature woman.

Recommended by Betty Evans, Milaca Branch Aide

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart (Teen Fiction, print, Bk on CD)
Read it!  And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE." This is how We Were Liars opens. Filled with mystery, intrigue and family drama, E. Lockhart's expertly crafted novel will stay with you long after it ends.

Recommended by Elizabeth Shirek, Chisago Lakes Branch Librarian

4th of July Creek by Smith Henderson (Adult Fiction, print)
This novel is about a social worker in rural Montana who tries to help families, including survivalists and drug addicts, raise their children. Meanwhile his own family is falling apart-- his
alcoholic wife has moved to Austin, Texas with his teenage daughter. The point of view switches from "Pete Snow", the social worker, to his daughter who has changed her name and run away. Though well written, the story depicts the sadness and dysfunction of many families.
