George McMahon Appointed to
State Library Consulting Group

Chisago County Commissioner George McMahon has been appointed to the Libraries and Service Delivery Consultant Group of the Minnesota Department of Education. Commissioner McMahon represents the Association of Minnesota Counties on the Consultant Group and serves as one of three Chisago County appointed trustees on the ECRL Board of Directors. The first meeting of the group was on August 18, 2014.

The 2014 Minnesota Legislature directed the Commissioner of the Department of Education to consult with people knowledgeable about state libraries and service delivery about ways to increase service delivery and collaboration between library governance systems.

The appointed group includes representatives from the Department of Education, regional public library systems, multicounty multitype library systems, metro and greater Minnesota public libraries, Minitex, public school library media specialists, Office of Higher Education, Association of Minnesota Counties, and League of Minnesota Cities.

The Libraries and Service Delivery Consultant Group will review options for changing library procedures and governance systems to ensure equitable and cost-effective access to library services statewide. The legislative charge also asks the group to consider ways to increase access to emerging electronic services.

A final report with recommendations is due by February 1, 2015. The Commissioner of Education must report to the Education Policy and Finance Committees of the Minnesota State Legislature on how to structure library systems to ensure that all Minnesota residents have equitable and cost-effective access to state-supported library services.

Staff Recommendations

The Children of Willesden Lane by Mona Golabek (ANF print)

This is a touching true story about a young girl who dreams of becoming a concert pianist. However, she is a Jew during WWII, and when the Germans attack, she is sent to a home that keeps Jewish orphans safe. It is an inspirational story about love and friendship, and even during war and turmoil, one can still follow their dreams.

The book contains an amazing array of photographs of libraries from
across our nation both in the big cities and from some of the most remote rural areas of our nation. Interspersed are short essays from library users and library staff that wonderfully illustrate how important the public library is to our citizens. Both our patrons and staff members will enjoy this book!

East Central Regional Library to Offer Bus Trip to Minnesota History Museum!

Join us as we visit the Minnesota History Museum for their new Toys of the 50's, 60's and 70's exhibit! Gumby. Barbie. Slinky. Mr. Potato Head. Wham-O. Spirograph. Hot Wheels. The names of popular toys from the 1950s, '60s and '70s capture the craziness, the joy, the sheer fun of being a kid. But beneath those nutty names are rich veins of nostalgia, memory and history. The stories of the kids who played with these toys, the adults who bought them, the child-rearing experts who judged them and the people who invented them, reflect the rhythms of American life. Experience the toys and their stories through three imagined living rooms that bring the decades back to life.
