ENHANCEMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR CUSTOMER USER INTERFACE

If your correlations service contract includes delivery of alignments via a Client User Interface (CUI), you may want to consider updating your CUI with the new enhanced look. The CUI display has been updated for standards and content searches and is available in various color schemes.

CUI_new_01

The CUI provides a method of accessing correlation data hosted by EdGate within a client's own website. The CUI is a drop-in solution that integrates seamlessly into an existing website. It provides clients with an application that allows their customers to view updated standards and correlation data on their website without needing to maintain a database of standards or correlation data. This application is customized by EdGate to look and behave in a manner consistent with the rest of the client's website.

Search results are exportable as well as printable. By using the icons on the search results pages for either the standard or content, results can be exported in Excel or Word and can also be printed. Below is an example of a Microsoft Word export of a content unit search.

Contact your Project Manager if you would like to see a demonstration of the enhancements available for Client User Interface or if you have a deliverable other than the CUI and would like to consider adding the CUI as another service.

COEXISTING WITH OER?

The International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL) seemed to be throwing down the gauntlet to publishers in its newest report "OER State Policy in K-12 Education: Benefits, Strategies, and Recommendations for Open Access, Open Sharing" with a statement that said "Today's textbooks are obsolete and the acquisition process is broken." The report explains the benefits of Open Educational Resources (OER) in the new Common Core State Standards climate according to iNACOL.

In a seemingly more reasonable response, Education Week's Sean Cavanagh published a follow-up article "Free Online Content Forces Publishers to Adjust." He goes on to explain that the commercial and free sectors, in his opinion, will coexist for years to come. In a very insightful quote from Lee Wilson of the Association of Educational Publishers, he brings up the notion that Open Educational Resources are not really free; the costs are simply transferred to other entities, such as foundations, universities, or states.

The Education Week article goes on to cite many examples of how some publishers are working with or supplementing OER materials.

UPDATE: MARYLAND and NEW YORK STATE COMMON CORE

The EdGate Standards Repository now includes the Maryland Common Core Curriculum Frameworks for Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies (Literacy).

These do not include the "Essential Skills and Knowledge" section from their documents as the state explained these are meant to be a supportive document for Maryland teachers but will not be lettered or numbered because the focus of instruction will be on the language in the Common Core State Standards.

The High School Mathematics standards are constructed as courses and units of study for Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. This format is similar to and follows the outline in the Common Core Model Course Pathways in Mathematics (Appendix A).

In regards to the New York State Draft Social Studies Frameworks for K-12, the state advised EdGate's standards team they are currently working on revisions these frameworks and anticipate a 2nd release for public review in the Fall 2013. Following that, they expect to release a final revision early next year (2014). Schools "may" begin to implement in the 2014-2015 school year, but the state explained it is most likely the full implementation will take place in 2015-2016.
