Vine and Branches

Lord,

the
one
true
vine,

in you we
 live and move
 and have our being.
We are your branches,
spindly, slight and fragile.

The prayer of the branches
is one with the prayer of the vine.
Abba listens to the beseeching of the vine.
You tell us to ask for whatever
we want and it will be
done for us.

Abba, please hear
our prayers.

We Celebrate Easter Birds and Flowers

Remember, it is Easter all the way to Pentecost!

Emmaus ECC is a member of Interfaith Works in Olympia WA. The 41st Annual Meeting is coming up soon -- Tuesday, May 19th, at 7:00 pm.  This year the meeting is being held at St. John Episcopal Church, 114 - 20th Ave. SE.  They are seeking donations of bird houses for the silent auction. If you have a new or unique birdhouse you can donate, contact Father John. You can find out more by reading the Interfaith Works newsletter HERE. If you have the evening available, join us for the Annual Meeting. Be sure to RSVP.

The technical difficulties for our website have been resolved, and we are once again up to date. Thanks for your patience.

Pentecost is coming soon.  Our Emmaus community had its first gathering on a Pentecost Sunday, so remember we also celebrate our birthday every Pentecost.  Plan to wear red on Pentecost.

If you or someone you know is looking for a wonderful way to be Catholic, you can find an authentic Catholicism at Emmaus ECC.  We are a Catholic community that is welcoming of all.  We do our best to follow the teaching and example of Jesus, and welcome everyone into our community, and to our table -- regardless of their race, gender, marital status or sexual orientation. Following the example of Jesus, we believe that everyone is the beloved daughter or son of God, and welcome at the table of the Christ.   No kidding!
Fifth Sunday of Easter

Who Cares?

The heart of Christian community is the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the vine; we are the branches. Living within the vine, we "will produce abundantly." Separated from the vine, we are, "a withered, rejected branch which can do nothing."

The commandment that binds together this community is twofold: to believe in Jesus and to "love one another as he commanded us." When following this commandment of faith and love, "we are at peace before him." Such a community of faith, love and peace is possible, and Luke assures us that "throughout all Judea, Galilee and Samaria the church was at peace."

Our world is not at peace; there is war and division everywhere. For our church to speak peace to this world, it will have to be a peaceful community. There must be that faith in, and reliance on Jesus, and there must also be that love for one another. The world must be able to look at us and say that we are at peace. Only then will our message of peace get through to others.

"That the Church may really be the sign of that solidarity which the family of nations desires, it should show in its own life greater cooperation between the Churches of rich and poor regions through spiritual communion and division of human and material resources." Synod of Bishops, Justice in the World (1971)

Community Business Meeting: We will continue with some short talks after mass for the next few weeks.

Interfaith Works Annual Meeting: May 19th, 7:00 pm at St. John Episcopal Church.

Pentecost: May 24th.  It is Easter all the way to Pentecost!

Contemplative Prayer/Scripture study -- Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 5 pm

Regional ECC Meeting

The Ecumenical Catholic Communion has several regions.  We are located in the Pacific Northwest Region.  Representatives from our communities, or parishes, gather once a month to meet with our Vicar, and to do regional business.  We also get to know each other, and are reminded that we belong to something greater than our own little community in Olympia.  We need more lay representatives at these meetings!  For years the laity have complained that they have no voice in the Church. Well, you are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.  In order to encourage more participation we are going to have our meetings by phone, and not as often as we have been having them.  Watch the schedule for our next meeting.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Would you be willing to volunteer, or to recruit a volunteer, to help with Interfaith Works programs? Lots of opportunities are listed below. IW office staff is ready to offer all kinds of support services to volunteers.

To get involved, or to request information about any program, please call 357-7224, 9:00am to 2:00pm Monday through Thursday.

The Peoples House:  To advance the social inclusion and empowerment of the homeless through innovative practices of sheltering, mental health and emergency basic needs coordination.

The Women's Shelter

The Interfaith Women's Shelter now provides refuge for homeless women throughout the year. Single homeless women in need of shelter should call the SideWalk Advocacy Center Shelter HelpLine at 360-515-5620 Monday through Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to be screened. A shelter volunteer will also be available nightly between 7:00-9:00 pm only to arrange urgent access to the women's shelter.

Faith communities house the shelter on a rotating basis and it is staffed by volunteer hosts. Other volunteers do laundry, move shelter materials from location to location and provide transportation. The program welcomes volunteers and donations of new twin sheets and pillowcases, as well as toiletry items.
