John 3: 13-17

So
wide,
the scope
of your love.

So
high
the price
you pay on it.

His
birth would
have been gift enough.
But in oneness with our sad world
you gave more.

The death of your
 Son.

We
stand before
 his glorious cross
and praise you for the

deep love

you pour out
so fully
upon
us.

Emmaus ECC
Celebrating God's wonderful diversity

Greetings.  Our Pacific Northwest Region of ECC is presently involved in a historic undertaking.  We are electing a bishop.  While our region includes Washington, Oregon and Idaho, at this time the election falls to our three existing communities in Washington:  St. Ignatius in Seattle, St. Clare in Spokane, and Emmaus in Olympia.  The nomination phase of the process is complete and our candidates for bishop are:

Father Tom Altepeter.  See his information HERE.
Mother Kedda Keough. See her information HERE

This process is meant to be a prayerful one of discernment on the part of all our community members.  Keep in mind that a bishop in the Ecumenical Catholic Communion is expected to be a Servant Leader for our region.  You can read the guidelines for a bishop HERE.  These guidelines are meant to help you discern who would be a good bishop for our region.

Note that the community meeting scheduled for September 21st has been moved to September 28th, after mass.  We will have the opportunity to vote for our new bishop during this mass.
*****

Absentee Ballot

You may vote for our NW Suffragan Bishop even if you are not able to join us for Eucharist on September 28th. If you attend Emmaus ECC in Olympia, please email Connie Hanser ([email protected]) as soon as possible and an absentee ballot will be sent to you either by email or USPS, if you prefer. Your completed absentee ballot must be received by Connie on or before Saturday, September 27th, or brought by you or someone else to the Sunday liturgy on or before the 28th, so it can be submitted with the other votes.

We are a growing region and new communities are forming.  At this time these new communities are missions.  The mission of Emmaus is The Good Shepherd and is forming in the Tacoma area, the two missions of St. Clare are St Francis in Chewela/Colville and The Church of Mary Magdalene in Pullman.

We are also going to elect our next Presiding Bishop, so if you have a preference, be sure to tell our Synod delegates:  Connie Hanser, Christine Garst, Fr. David Gerardot, or Mthr. Kedda Keough.

If you or someone you know is looking for a wonderful way to be Catholic, you can find an authentic Catholicism at Emmaus ECC.  We are a Catholic community that is welcoming of all.  We do our best to follow the teaching and example of Jesus, and welcome everyone into our community, and to our table -- regardless of their race, gender, marital status or sexual orientation. Following the example of Jesus, we believe that everyone is the beloved daughter or son of God, and welcome at the table of the Christ.   No kidding!
Centering Prayer
Burning Heart

"Please join us for Centering Prayer.  We gather every Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 5:00.  We will not be gathering, however, on September 11th and October 9th.  ALL ARE WELCOME.

REFECTION

"Within the Christian story it is possible to see that divine self-emptying in the incarnation and passion of Christ is not an uncharacteristic divine action.  Rather, this historical moment discloses the pattern of Sophia-God's love always and everywhere operative.  Divine freely self-giving love did not begin with God's personal entering into human history but is so typical that it plays out at the dawn of creation itself".  Elizabeth Johnson, She Who Is. p. 234.
Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Christ who, out of that unfathomable depth of sacrificial love, draws all to himself, is cosmic.  Ancient Chinese wisdom understood humanity as the "hsin" or heart of the universe.  That Passion, that "Stellung des Menschen im Kosmos," was denied in the human arrest.  It was reclaimed by the first blood shed in total freedom.

The rejection of our common fate
makes us strangers to each other.
The election of this fate in love
reveals us as one body.
How much more truly than we know
do we call this choice the Passion:
life lived to the limit, and the limiting cross.
In this dangerous memory caught in the single word
we are one body cosmic.

The Ecumenical Catholic Communion

The Ecumenical Catholic Communion shares a common theology and liturgical tradition with the universal Catholic Church.  Our bishops, priests and deacons participate in the same apostolic succession as does the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches and other apostolic sacramental churches.

Distinctives:

Although we share a common theology and liturgical tradition with the Catholic Church, we have, and will continue to develop Distinctive Teachings to express our growing understanding at the implications of the Gospel message of Christ in our time.  These teachings include -- that each baptized person is an equal member of the Catholic Church and this equality must be evident in Synodal and local governance and ministry; that all the baptized, irrespective of marital status or sexual orientation and relationship, are welcome to celebrate the sacraments; that the ministerial priesthood in the ECC is open to all the baptized, regardless of gender, sexual orientation and relationships, or marital status; and that in intimate affairs, such as the decision to divorce and the use of artificial birth control, the ECC follows the primacy of an individual's conscience.

All members participate in selecting bishops and pastors  This practice has historic precedence in Catholic tradition.  "He is to govern all and should be chosen by all."  (Pope Leo I in 450)

Schedule:

Next Community meeting:
September 28th, after mass.  This will include voting for the new bishop.

ECC Synod:  October 7 to 11th in Colorado.

Contemplative Prayer/Scripture study -- Thursday afternoon from 3:30 to 5 pm
Regional ECC Meeting

The Ecumenical Catholic Communion has several regions.  We are located in the Pacific Northwest Region.  Representatives from our communities, or parishes, gather once a month to meet with our Vicar, and to do regional business.  We also get to know each other, and are reminded that we belong to something greater than our own little community in Olympia.  We need more lay representatives at these meetings!  For years the laity have complained that they have no voice in the Church. Well, you are invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.  In order to encourage more participation we are going to have our meetings by phone, and not as often as we have been having them.  Watch the schedule for our next meeting.

House

The Peoples House:  Leaders are asking faith communities to attend meetings and show support.  Father David is involved and would love to have you join him.

The Women's Shelter:  This is a great need in our community and is yet another project Interfaith Works is supporting.  Volunteers are needed as Evening Greeters, Overnight Hosts and Hot Meal delivery.  The shelter is temporarily at First Christian.  They are asking for donations.

Go HERE to read more about Interfaith Works, and all their programs.
NOTICE
The Sacraments of Marriage, Reconciliation and Anointing, are available upon request.   Preparation is required for Baptisms -- for parents when children to be baptized are below age seven; for those over age seven, our community supports the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.  Our priests are also happy to meet with you individually, and confidentially, to discuss any spiritual or pastoral concerns you may have.
