Happy Thanksgiving

thanksgiving-pie-header.jpg

Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays!  A holiday - starting off with a Turkey Trot where ever you are in the world.  Here in our hometown, a run down Delaware Avenue with 14,000 of your fellow runners.  An opportunity to run with friends and family.  I have been part of this holiday tradition for almost 30 years - running with my best buddies and always telling them how thankful I am to have them in my life.  The race ends and we move on on to celebrating the day with friends at the post race event or other various locations around town - toasting the run and the start of the holiday season!  Hope to see many of you on the roads on Turkey Day!

Thanksgiving also gives us all the opportunity to reflect on the people and things in our lives that make us happy and thankful.  So, we want to talk about the things we are thankful for here at Fleet Feet Sports.  Our amazing team - a group of dedicated, enthusiastic FIT professionals totally focused on helping all of you meet your fitness goals.  Our loyal customers - we are thankful everyday for your support of our mission - to influence health, fitness and movement in our community.  Our vendor partners - there for all of us everyday with product, training tools and knowledge.  Our medical partners - providing resources to help get runners back out on the roads.

As we rush into the holiday season, there are so many fun, informative and exciting events at Fleet Feet Sports - vendor sponsored group runs, shoe launches, holiday shopping events, Small Business Saturday and more.  Check out all the details in FootPrints and get them on your calendar.  Give back to the community with donations to our Annual Food Drive and earn Personal Rewards points for every donation you make.  Be sure to fit us into your busy holiday schedules - we guarantee you will have fun!

Fleet Feet Sports announced a big new race event coming to Buffalo the night of our wildly crazy Diva Night and then on Facebook.  We want to share details with all of you right here in FootPrints.

Dan has been working with the Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission to bring national race series to Western New York.  These events add value to our community - large, fun, new events for runners of all levels, participants coming into Buffalo and visiting our hotels, restaurants, and shops.  Events that have a social and economic impact on our community.  The Color Run hit town this past August with 10,000 participants in its first running.  And The Color Run is back and committed for 2014.  Now we have another national race series coming to town in 2014!

We are thrilled to partner with The Biggest Loser Run/Walk Half Marathon/5K coming to Buffalo on 8/31/14 (the Sunday of Labor Day weekend).  The Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K will replace the Fleet Feet 15K-Run into Buffalo which has run on Labor Day for 7 years.  We want to thank everyone who has been part of the Fleet Feet 15K for supporting the race and our initiative - Shoes on Students.

What will not change is Fleet Feet Sports commitment to our community and Shoes on Students (SOS)!   A donation from The Biggest Loser Half Marathon/5K will benefit Shoes on Students and continue to provide new training shoes for young runners in our community.  We will continue the work that started 7 years ago - giving young athletes the tools to be successful.  Read more about this event in the Partner Races section and register now to be part of a new Labor Day weekend tradition.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL!!!  Enjoy this wonderful season.

Alice and Dan Loncto and the Fleet Feet Sports Team

There will be a special email sent out before Black Friday to announce the sales and specials for that day and weekend.
Be on the lookout for the special email announcement!
The store will be closed on Thanksgiving Day!
Some of my favorite winter things...
Something about this time of the year makes me think of that song, "My Favorite Things" from the Sound of Music. Maybe it has something to do with the warm woolen mittens, sleigh bells, and packages wrapped with string. Now that the snow is flying it is officially time to break into the winter gear again. No one is happy about it, but good winter equipment can be the difference between a happy run and frost-bite .

1. Raindrops on...anything but me! I am really torn this year on picking a favorite water resistant jacket. It comes down to the Nike Shield Jacket and the Northface Apex Lite Jacket. Both get high marks for performance so I will let you be the judge on that. As for the tights that make the outfit complete? I highly recommend the Nike Shield tights to keep the water off or the Northface Winter Warm tights. I would have a complete tight wardrobe out of just those two tights if I could.

2. Whiskers on...shoes? Well not really whiskers, but spikes. Once you try Due North traction aids, you will never run without them again (in the winter). They offer tons of grip to help keep you from slipping around give you peace of mind that you won't take a spill that will derail your training.

3. Bright copper...headlamps? It is dark and cold and you are running around in a minefield of ice, salt, and crazy drivers. See where you are going with a Petzel headlamp. They are bright enough to alert drivers that you are there and help you keep off curbs and ice patches that will ruin your holidays.

4. Warm woolen...socks? You bet. After spending long hours in the cold at last year's Beast of Burden 50 miler I will never again underestimate the power of a good pair of wool socks. Most people hear wool and see itchy heavy sweaters that shrink up when put in the dryer. You owe it to yourself to try the Feetures Elite Merino blends. In addition to being the warmest socks you could own they will never get stinky. Bacteria can't grow on wool fibers, so wool garments don't retain odor. Pretty cool right? If woolen MITTENS are more your style check out our glove and mitten collections. They may not be woolen but they are just as warm!

5. Brown paper packages tied up with...shoe laces? The new shoe parade at Fleet Feet has been really impressive. Many of the store's favorite shoes have updated. What are the new shoes? The Saucony Guide 7, Saucony Triumph 11, Brooks Adrenaline GTS14, New Balance 860v4, New Balance 890v4, Nike Pegasus Shield, and the Nike Structure 17. While the Nike Shield is my favorite in terms of looks (who can resist a subtle leopard print?) the Saucony Triumph is hands down my favorite new arrival in terms of fit and feel. Just the right combination of firmness and softness makes me want to take these for a long moonlight run....or something like that!

6. Cream colored....buffs? My favorite new accessory. The polar fleece Buff Bands need no explanation, they are just amazing. Keep the wind out of your lungs or the hair out of your face. The cream colored Kashfly crew is my new favorite color and stylish enough to wear even when I am not running.

What are a few of your favorite winter running things? If you don't have favorites yet  or it is your first winter running, stop in and see me. I'm sure I can help you find some new favorites for this winter!

We will be collecting donations for a local food pantry from November 1st to November 21st. For every non-perishable food item you donate we will add $.50 to your customer rewards points account. Donate 10 cans and it is like you spent $5.00 in the store! The more you donate, the more points you rack up. So donate a little, feel good about helping someone in need, and get a little back.
