#GC79 news from the Dioceses of Eastern and Western Michigan.
July 4, 2018
Hello!

Greetings from Austin! I can officially report that it is hot.

Our deputies arrived in Austin Monday and Tuesday and jumped into the work of the Church including the first of the in-person committee meetings and hearings. The House of Deputies and the House of Bishops began their first common gatherings this afternoon, beginning with an opening word from the Presiding Bishop and the President of the House of Deputies and an orientation to the process. I'm live-tweeting the discussion from the diocesan Twitter accounts - @dioeastmich and @wmichepiscopal and posting livestreams and overviews on our Facebook pages.

Please continue to pray for our gathering, both for our deputations and for the 10,000+ people from across the church assembled in Austin for the 79th General Convention.

Peace,

Worship at General Convention
Worship and prayer are central to the General Convention
Worship and other opportunities for prayer are central to the work of the General Convention.

Charged by the Presiding Bishop to plan liturgies representative of the diversity of the Church, the liturgy team spoke with over thirty different groups and the lead ethnic missioners on the church-wide staff to create liturgies borrowing from different languages and traditions and translated into the three official languages of the Episcopal Church - English, Spanish, and French.

All services will be live streamed on the Media Hub. The opening Eucharist will take place tomorrow, July 5th at 9:30am CST/10:30am EST.

"The terms for God, in the poetic language of the prayers written for centuries, have almost always been male...This week, the church is debating whether to overhaul [the] prayer book — in large part to make clear that God doesn’t have a gender."
(Opinion, Bishop Sean Rowe) " The Episcopal Church has much work to do to ensure the fair treatment of women at every institutional level, from the local parish to the highest positions of power."

Prayer for the General Convention
Almighty and everlasting Father, you have given the Holy Spirit to abide with us for ever: Bless, we pray, with his grace and presence, the bishops and other clergy and the laity assembled in your Name, that your Church, being preserved in true faith and godly discipline, may fulfill all the mind of him who loved it and gave himself for it, your Son Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.
