2012 has been a wonderful year for us - one filled with excitement by hosting the 2012 USA Half Marathon Championships! As the year comes to a close, we are very busy planning for the 37th annual Grandma's Marathon weekend - June 20 - 22, 2013 and are looking forward to bringing the nation's top runners to Duluth again for the 2013 USA Half Marathon Championships!

In September, we hosted our final event on the 2012 racing calendar, the Minnesota Mile. Four divisions - the Minnesota Mile (elite), Duluth Mile (semi-elite), All-City Mile (recreational) and the Verizon Wireless Kids Mile, a total of 549 registrants, raced down Superior Street in Downtown Duluth on a beautiful fall day. Craig Miller of Madison, Wisconsin, and Heather Kampf, of Minneapolis, claimed the titles. Congratulations to Craig and Heather!

We hosted our 26th annual Young Athletes Foundation Live & Silent Auction on October 24th and I'm happy to report that we raised nearly $18,000 for youth athletics in our five-county region! The Young Athletes Foundation, established in 1990 by Grandma's Marathon to assist with the promotion, development and growth of youth athletics, has contributed over $500,000 since its inception to nonprofit youth athletic organizations and programs in Carlton, Cook, Lake, St. Louis and Douglas Counties. We had a great time. Thank you to all of our sponsors, contributors and participants!

On behalf of the Grandma's Marathon Staff and Board of Directors, I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season and I hope to see you in 2013!

"Cirrus is excited to continue our role as sponsor for Grandma's Marathon. We gladly honor our tradition of maintaining support for a community that has shown so much support for us," said Cirrus Co-founder and CEO, Dale Klapmeier. It may seem like a non-traditional partnering - the world's leading general aviation manufacturer and a world-class road race - yet both can boast Duluth pride on an international level.

maurices has been one of the mainstay businesses in Duluth for more than 80 years, but its impact on the fashion industry and on the community goes way beyond this northern Minnesota town.

What started in 1931 as a small women's fashion shop in downtown Duluth, has grown into an operation consisting of 850 specialty stores across the U.S. and Canada. maurices, which today employs over 6,500 people and is owned by Ascena Retail Group, inc., continues to inspire young women to find their style, with affordable fashions in sizes 1-24. Whether it's jeans or jewelry, maurices offers everything a girl needs to fill her closet with the latest trends. maurices commitment to offering the highest quality merchandise mirrors their mission to be good corporate citizens by giving back to community organizations throughout the nation.

In 1947, Mario Trinchero, an Italian immigrant living in New York City with his young family, was convinced by his brother John to move across the country to the rural and remote Napa Valley. The countryside reminded John Trinchero of the home in the Piedmont region of Italy where the Trincheros had been raised. John found a winery abandoned since Prohibition called Sutter Home, and believed that he and his brother could reopen the winery and live a quiet and prosperous country life. The brothers purchased the winery, and Mario moved his wife Mary and three young children Bob, Vera, and Roger to the Napa Valley.
