Thank you to everyone who participated in the 36th annual Grandma's Marathon weekend! We are very appreciative of the support we receive from our 5,000+ volunteers, community members, sponsors and of course our runners and fans. It was certainly a year to remember as we hosted the 2012 USA Men's and Women's Half Marathon Championships. We were thrilled to have USA Olympic marathon team runners, Abdi Abdirahman and Kara Goucher, claim the titles in the USA Half Marathon Championship races. Kara Goucher, a Duluth native, raced in her hometown for the first time during her professional career and broke the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon course record!

With the 36th annual race weekend behind us, plans are well underway for the 2013 Grandma's Marathon weekend, which will again include the USA Half Marathon Championships. Registration for Grandma's Marathon opened in July at and details for each of our races are also available on our website.

Along with the Young Athletes Foundation (YAF), we hosted the 41st annual Park Point 5-Miler & 2-Mile Walk in July and we're happy to report that with over 550 participants we were able to raise thousands of dollars for the YAF.

We wrapped up our annual Wednesday Night at the Races series, a program that is made possible by the Young Athletes Foundation. Free races for children ages 14 and under were held each Wednesday for six weeks at varying locations, with the final event at Park Point featuring a summer-end picnic catered by Texas Roadhouse as well as t-shirts and medallions for the kids. Thank you to all of the families that joined us, a great time was had by all!

Final preparations are also in progress here for this weekend's Minnesota Mile races, which will be held on Sunday, September 9. The Minnesota Mile is a great occasion to get the family out and enjoy a run through Duluth's beautiful Downtown and 250 lucky finishers will be randomly selected to receive guaranteed entries into the 2013 Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon. Pre-registration is available online at for $20 and late registration will be available for $25 on Saturday, September 8 from noon - 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 9 from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m. in the Fitger's lobby at 600 East Superior Street.

Thank you again for your support of Grandma's Marathon and we hope to see you soon!

Kara Goucher's first time racing in her hometown as a professional turned into a victory party as the former Duluth resident won the women's race at June's 2012 USA Half Marathon Championships.

Goucher, 33, ran the fastest ever women's time on the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon course - 1 hour, 9 minutes and 46 seconds. She captured the national title and $14,000 in prize money - $12,000 for first place and an additional $2,000 bonus for a time under 1:10:00.

It was 31 years ago that Bill Austin and Jarrow Wahman used their love of running and their desire to help the community to begin a running club. They never knew then, that it would shape the way both young and old runners view running or even that their passion could be continued through a business that offers high-quality running gear.
