Dear Girl Scout Family,
Last week I was invited to a Girl Scout event to help girls make sit-upons. In my mind I instantly pictured my sit-upon from third grade: 2 squares of plastic tablecloth with "Raggedy Ann & Andy" graphics all over, red yarn whip-stitched around the edges to keep the newspaper inside. I was proud of my sit-upon: it was both functional and useful.
Wistfully & instantly I said yes as I thought about hundreds of girls weaving yarn through plastic. Later they'd be warm and comfortable in their friendship circle, singing Make New Friends.
Well ... the design process has gotten considerably easier (with re-closable freezer bags) and fashionable (with colored duct tape) but recycled newspaper is still the sit-upon filling choice for today's girls. I was delighted when a troop sat right down and tried their new sit-upon before they moved on to another station.
It makes my day to see the great Girl Scout traditions get updated and enjoyed by today's girls. It's the stuff inspiration is made out of. Share a tradition today.
Tauna All Girl Scout Offices will be closed January 21. |
