Dear Girl Scout Family,

Getting the most from travel time.

Whether you're going across town or across the state, this week I'm sharing thoughts that have worked for me in using travel time to strengthen relationships with my kids.

  • CAPTIVE AUDIENCE. Everybody seat-belted in & ready to roll? As you're loading, consider putting electronic devices like cell phones in the back. Try keeping the radio low or off.
  • CONVERSATION GROUND RULES. My kids liked having car conversations as a safe space where they could bring up anything and we'd brainstorm solutions.  Admittedly we drove around the block more than once to bring some resolve to especially difficult issues. As the kids got older they'd use the code word "van talk" and our ground rule transferred to wherever we were.
  • TOPICS. What comes up when it's quiet? The kids may open up with what's on their mind! Other times you might bring forward a current event for a more grown up discussion. My kids liked being challenged to see both sides of the issue. Don't underestimate the "just for fun stuff" (like the times our family made up verses to Your mama don't wear no socks for more than an hour.) Just for fun activities open the door for "heavier" topics.

Fall in Minnesota and Wisconsin: picture perfect views around every bend, sparkling  water dancing in the wind, miles of fields being harvested. It's a great time for travel. Wherever you go this week, my friends, move purposefully & take time to enjoy the journey!
