What a beautiful day for a Garden Day!

On a beautiful Saturday in early May, the St. Andrew's Episcopal Parish treated our community to a fabulous event! Orchestra ensembles from Maryville High School played beautiful music while participants enjoyed learning more about plants, munching on goodies from the bake sale, admiring the hand-made pottery, perusing the Silent Auction and of course checking out the pre-potted herbs.  Meanwhile in the kitchen a most scrumptious lunch was being prepared!  Served at Noon a delightful lunch (Mediterranean chicken salad, pasta and fruit salads with a yummy pumpkin crumb muffin on the side) was served to a crowd of 300!  On Sunday May 18th the total profits from the luncheon were shared with Good Neighbors.  A record for the event! $10,610.73!!!  More than 140 neighbors may be assisted with these funds!  What a tremendous blessing for our community!  Thank you St. Andrew's Parish!

Who Serves There?

You may wonder where the volunteer staff comes from and how they found us.  For many of our staff, the simple answer is that someone told them about Good neighbors and they called or emailed or Facebook messaged GN to ask if there was something they could do to help!  Blessings!!!  Anyway, our volunteers provide a multitude of talents.  We have folks who answer phones, complete data entry tasks, greet neighbors, file, assist with mailings, coach our neighbors, research, keep our resources up to date, empty trash and make copies and also make follow up phone calls.  Currently we have 4 people making follow up calls.   Don Myers is the team leader and has been serving since 2009. Next up are Carolyn Flowers and Suzanne Ensslin who also joined our staff in 2009 and most recently Vivian Selecman joined in the follow up fun. As we follow up with neighbors through phone calls discoveries are made about additional resources that might be needed or if the neighbors have used the resources they were given and of course letting them know we care and are here if they need some further information.  It has become a necessity for part of them to work on days we are not seeing neighbors just so we have a phone line available! They are a great team and important part of the ministry provided at GN! Next time we will find out about some others who serve here!  If you are interested, give us a call!

Who Funds Good Neighbors Ministry?

It may not be who you think!

GN is funded by a broad range of donors.  51% of those donors are churches (20+) of them.  In 2013 they provided $85,680 of the budget.  21% ($34,734) of GN funds came from United Way, private foundations and other grants.  Representing 17% ($28,294) of GN funding are individual gifts and GN Board member gifts (100% participation) and finally 12% comes from direct fund-raising efforts.

So next time Papa Murphy's has a GN date - enjoy some pizza and help your neighbors!  2014 stats will be different but this gives you a general idea how GN is funded!

From Where I Sit...

Rev Lisa Blackwood Exec Director

Whew!  What a whirlwind of stories, faces and ringing phones!  The first third of the year has been almost overwhelming.  The volunteer staff and Board of Director's have worked more than overtime and always with a smile.  We have been blessed to assist so many families, assuring that they have utilities and a safe place to stay.

There is more to the story though. Good Neighbors has been "out and about" telling our story, raising funds, meeting with other community agencies, learning about grant writing and better ways of communicating with other agencies.  We have visited Blount Christian Church,  St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church, Fairview United Methodist, First United Methodist Church of Maryville, Kiwanis, and Maryville Housing Authority Landlord Training. You may have seen our smiling faces at Papa Murphy's, Helpline (United Way), Task Force on Homelessness in Blount County, the Family Promise Banquet, Maryville City Schools Family Resource Center Advisory Board, Staff Meeting with Community Action Agency or at the Charity Check presentations.

We have been involved with 2 major fundraisers so far this year and two more are in the planning stage.....  First the Springtime Spectacular (a variety show) and then supporting St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on their Garden Day.  We continue to work with Papa Murphy's ( next date is June 26th).  We can't go without thanking Tom Vorjohan,  Sue Duchaw, Jeff Hutchison and Laurel Wright for sharing their gifts and talents at the Spring Spectacular. The entire church family at St. Andrew's was gracious to host Garden Day on the most beautiful day we have shared this spring!  There is just no way to thank everyone who participated. It's all about community and relationship and we are more than grateful.

People often ask how they can help.....  there are several ways:

  • Make sure your church, your Pastor, and church office staff know about Good Neighbors (we will be glad to send brochures)
  • Call Good Neighbors if you need help
  • If you encounter someone who needs assistance, send them our way and we will do our best to help.
  • Pray for this ministry, the staff, the neighbors and the board

The good news is that many families have been helped. The even better news is that our community has stood strong supporting their neighbors in need.  Blount County is truly a great place to live....  no let's be honest... it's an amazing place to live!

Well, it's already hot most days and we are wondering what this summer will bring.  We will be ready regardless! Happy spring everyone!!

It's all good, good news, good people and Good Neighbors!

Stories of Hope...
and Changed Lives
True stories, fictional names of neighbors who came for help...

Sarah currently lives in a half-way house.  She is eagerly trying to move on with her life and make better choices.  The Director of the half-way house is impressed with Sarah and her efforts and wrote a letter of confidence as proof.  Several issues have made it more difficult for Sarah to find work -first of all not having a High School diploma or GED and second no transportation.  Regardless she has been able to find a job and will begin tomorrow.  This will be a new beginning for her and hopefully she will be able to continue on the path to self-sufficiency.  During the discussion with the Coach, Sarah was told that GN would cover the cost of her GED/HiSet test when she was ready to take it.  After speaking with the Director, the Coach felt confident that Sarah was on the right path and GN covered a portion of her rent.

Tonya was struggling to keep everything together.  As a single mother of three pre-school children there are many responsibilities not the least of which is financial.  She has been off for maternity leave and will be heading back to work soon.  This time off without pay has made it very difficult for Tonya to keep up with her bills.  She lives in subsidized housing and can't afford to lose that arrangement.  Referred to Good Neighbors by the utility company, she was so appreciative of the help that GN was able to give her.  GN paid the last $76 of her $160 utility bill.  When the follow up team made a call a few months later, she was doing very well and indicated that the resources of food pantries, Welcome Table and CAA had made a difference for her family.  She is doing well now.
