Letter to Our Community

Dear Partners & Community Members,

Groundwork Richmond has had an outstanding year thanks to your support. As one of the many community organizations involved in Richmond's new "Unity Park" on the Richmond Greenway, we are nearly done with construction for this project that was designed by the community and for the community's enjoyment. We look forward, as we hope you do, to seeing a sneak peek of the newly constructed plaza and art at Unity Park on Arbor Day, October 21st!

This fall we wrap up the CalFIRE project - for which we've planted almost 600 trees locally with the help of partners - and jump into Unity Park & Coastal Conservancy Grant planting projects in Richmond.

We are excited as always to be working with the National Park Service, City of Richmond, nonprofit partners, local residents and others as we collectively come together to build a stronger community!

In Partnership,
Sarah Calderon,
Executive Director
Urban Forestry Update

Increasing Green Spaces

The Urban Forestry program is closing up the summer by connecting with partners and engaging residents in preparation for the fall tree-planting season, kicking off this October!

We’ve been busy conducting site assessments for potential planting locations and training our Green Team Leaders to supervise incoming team members and community volunteers throughout this fall's planting actions.
Staff & Green Team members stake a tree @ Booker T. Anderson park.
We have a series of new tree planting projects coming up on Arbor Day, the Unity Park Unveiling & MLK Day of Service on the Richmond Greenway where we will continue greening and beautifying our city with the support of community partners.

What is the Green Team?
One of the programs we’re most proud of is our work with the Green Team, a core group of youth, who work on everything from local community service to projects with the National Park Service. Our youth participate in a number of initiatives that provide them with exposure to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) disciplines.
To meet our leadership development benchmarks we secure unique project-based skill building opportunities that also provide access to outdoor & non-traditional career opportunities.

This year our Green Team has participated in stewardship, restoration and recreational activities at home here in Richmond's own Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park and other National Parks around the nation, like: John Muir National Historic Site , Point Reyes National Seashore , Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP , Yosemite NP and Muir Woods National Monument .
Green Team in the coming year:
Our Green Team has had an exciting year so far and it’s not over yet! With many of our members graduating and moving on from their high school & college programs, we began recruiting for the coming year's Green Team.

We hosted an orientation and a Cultural Competency Training in September. Now with a new and expanded Green Team we plan to continue our community based projects with the rest of the Groundwork family at upcoming events.

If you are interested in joining the Green Team, learn more here .

"I've been with Groundwork Richmond pretty much my entire high school career, and this program has given so much purpose in my life because I was doing more than your average teenager. Richmond Awarded Funding to Increase Green Spaces!
Coastal Conservancy Grant
Groundwork Richmond is working in Richmond neighborhoods - adjacent to Unity Park on the Greenway - to green the community, improve water quality, reduce flooding & clean the air locally!

This is thanks to a Coastal Conservancy Prop 1 grant of $500,000 awarded to local organizations and the city. Groundwork is planting 262 trees and The Watershed Project is building vital bio-swales & rain gardens to be completed by 2019.
