Countdown is on for I-SWEEEP 2012

The International Sustainable World Energy, Engineering and Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP) 2012 is just around the corner. More than 1,000 participants from all over the world will display their innovative ideas at George R. Brown Convention Center of Houston. Mark your calendars for Public Day and come see this year's exciting entries and demonstrations.

Harmony Student to Represent Texas in National MathCounts

Harmony School of Excellence (HSE) - Houston placed third at the Texas State MATHCOUNTS Competition held in late March. HSE was the only charter school to place in the top ten, and Stephen Price, an 8th grader at HSE, will represent Harmony, and the state of Texas, at nationals on May 11, 2012 in Orlando.

Qualification for the World Championship

On Saturday, April 14, 2012, the Harmony School of Innovation - Houston Omers competed with teams from all over the state in their long term problem, "To Be Or Not To Be" as part of the Odyssey of the Mind Competition. The Omers outscored eight other teams to secure one of two spots for teams that will go on to represent Texas at the world championship competition at Iowa State University later this month! Thomas, Tien, Isabel, Favour, Abraham, Teren, and Jeffrey are all first year participants in Odyssey of the Mind and have dedicated many hours to achieve this honor. The Omers, staff and administration are working very hard to raise the $10,000 necessary to send the team to Iowa, and you can be a part of this effort by contacting HIS-Houston (713-541-3030). We wish them well as they move on to represent our school and our state.

Harmony to Establish Partnership with UNT Dallas
 We are pleased to announce that Harmony School of Nature & Athletics will be partnering with UNT Dallas. Harmony and UNT Dallas will be working together to simultaneously improve teacher education and renew public schooling. This partnership hopes to address the challenge of providing high quality professional development for teachers and identifying school service and research opportunities for students and faculty.

Mayor Mike Rawlings' Intern Fellows Program

Harmony Science Academy Dallas (HSA-Dallas) received an invitation to participate in the 2012 Mayor Mike Rawlings' Intern Fellows Program. The program provides 10th and 11th graders with the opportunity to participate in an eight week paid summer internship with groups ranging from Fortune 500 companies, such as AT&T and JPMorgan Chase, to local non-profits in the Dallas area. The program boasts that it will provide each student with a real world job view and compensation beyond a typical summer job.

Best School Award for Division I

On April 21, 2012, Harmony Science Academy-Fort Worth received the "Best School" Award for Division I (high school) at the Fort Worth Science Fair Awards Ceremony, hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington. Congratulations to Ms. Nickolson who won "Best Teacher" for Division II (middle school). A very special thanks goes to Ms. Spaeder for all her hard work and dedication, as well as to all the teachers and students who did such a terrific job!

Harmony Teacher Receives 2012 School Bell Award

Each year the Laredo Chamber of Commerce Education Committee takes time to honor educators as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. A special recognition - the School Bell Award - is presented to those educators that are selected by their peers for their performance in and out of the classroom. On behalf of Harmony Science Academy-Laredo, we would like to Congratulate our Mrs. Geraldine Salas, a 2nd grade teacher, for being selected the 2012 School Bell Award Recipient. Laredo Chamber of Commerce will recognize Mrs. Salas as an outstanding teacher in the School Bell Award Event on May 9, 2012.

Harmony Celebrates the Earth Day
On Saturday, April 21, 2012, Harmony School of Nature and Athletics (HSNA) celebrated Earth Day by beautifying the school campus. A number of students from all grade levels, along with their parents and teachers, planted shrubs, flowers, fruits, vegetables and other greenery. HSNA is grateful to all who provided the plants, seeds and top soil. Earth Day is about giving back to our only home and for HSNA it starts with our campus. |
El Paso UIL Computer Team Advanced to the State

Harmony Science Academy's UIL team's in literary criticism, spelling, science, mathematics, social studies, current issues, and computer science competed at Regional UIL Academics April 20, 2012. The Social Studies Team came in 3rd with Noah H. placing 5th individually. The Computer Science team will advance to the UIL Academics State competition that will take place on May 21, 2012. The team of Edward S., Andrew M., Manny L., Marcos Z., and Janette M. came in 1st place with Edward placing 2nd individually.

Austin Harmony Students Visit the Court House
 Students from Harmony School of Excellence Austin sat in on court proceedings at the Travis County court house. Judge Sulak invited Harmony students to listen in on a civil hearing. MCFA Workers Talk to Harmony Science Kids about Conflict
Five Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. employees gave a lecture on understanding, managing and resolving conflict to more than 250 students at Harmony Science Academy in Katy. The lecture forms part of Harmony Science Academy's College Readiness and Leadership Program. More than 400 students from kindergarten through eighth grade form part of the program, which aims to increase students' interest in science and math so that more students will consider engineering careers.

Faces of Harmony: Steven Adamson

We interviewed Steven Adamson, Dean of Discipline and Outreach Coordinator at Harmony School of Nature in Dallas.
How and when did your Harmony experience start? What positions have you held so far?
I started with Harmony in 2006 as a third grade teacher. Since then, I have taught ELA 4-6 and 8th, Social studies 5,6, and 9. I have been chair of the ELA department and Social Studies as well as Dean of Discipline at the Nature Campus and Outreach coordinator.

STEM Websites from Harmony Students

High school students at Harmony create individual STEM websites for their own STEM projects, a new addition to Science curriculum. It is currently applied at HSA Houston as a pilot project. However, starting from 2012-2013 school year, all Harmony Schools will launch this program. Each month, we will introduce one student website from Physics, Chemistry and Math. This month, we have Wimshurst Machine (Physics), Chemical Garden (Chemistry) and Mind Reading (Math) for you. Enjoy!
