Congressman McCaul Honors Harmony Opening

Saturday, February 4th, Harmony School of Political Science had their official ribbon cutting ceremony. The school was honored with many local leaders and lawmakers including Congressman Michael McCaul to name a few. Dr. Tarim, Harmony Public Schools Superindent, was also there for this momentous occasion.

The event was truly special including a school choir, art displays and followed by a warm reception for all attendees.

Harmony Sweeps First Tech Challenge Awards

MoHawk Warriors, the Robotics team of Harmony School of Advancement, participated in the First Tech ChallengeSoutheast Texas Tournament,  competing against more than 30 schools. Harmony students won first place in all categories and also received the Alliance Award, Best Robot Design Award, Motivate Award, Connect Award, Innovate Award, and Inspire Award, winning a total of 11 awards.

Robotics Team Wins First Place
Houston HS FTC

On Friday, February 3, two robotics teams from Harmony Science Academy Houston - High School competed in the 2012 FIRST Technology Challenge Regional Competition at San Jacinto College in Houston. At the end of the day, the Iron Pandas advanced to the championship, to be held on March 3by winning the first place Inspire Award (the highest award that could be won), second place Inspire Award, and second and third place awards for their engineering notebooks.

 

We applaud the efforts of our students and the team's coaches, Mr. Turan and Ms. Kern. Go Iron Pandas!

Congratulations to the Harmony School of AdvancementLady Hawks basketball team for winning the 2012 Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League High School Girls State Championship. This was Harmony School of Advancement's first year in TCSAAL.

Laredo Luncheon
U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar visited Harmony Academy of Science - Laredo on February 22, 2012.  A luncheon was held in his honor. The Congressman delivered a speech to high school students, teachers, parents and school administrators. where he discussed a variety of topics including the importance of Harmony Science Academy and how Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are vital to our school system and how vital these aspects are in today's modern society.

Since the beginning of the year, Harmony School of Innovation - Houston has been strengthening its community outreach efforts and recently launched the Harmony Hot Topics Panel Discussion Series.

This series will provide a forum where relevant topics such as cultural diversity in Houston, health care, drop-out rates and child abuse/neglect are presented by leaders and/or experts in those fields, then discussed by those in attendance in an effort to provide education on those issues, and perhaps develop solutions.

Harmony School of Advancementsenior, Leon L. won third place in Geometry at the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament.

HMMT is an annual math tournament organized jointly by Harvard and MIT Math undergraduate students in Cambridge, MA. Every year, approximately 1,000 students from across the nation participate in this prestigious and competitive event.

Many congratulations to Leon for his accomplishment.   

Texas Legislature Hears Positive Endorsements for Charter Schools

On Friday, February 17, the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Public Education met to discuss the overall charter school system in Texas. The hearing was designed to review the operation of charter schools, in general, and provide an opportunity to learn more about the system that now serves approximately 130,000 students across 206 open-enrollment campuses, with an additional 56,000 on the waiting list.    

 

Harmony Public Schools is the largest charter school operating system in the state with 36 campuses and 20,000 students. Harmony had a strong attendance at the hearing, with several witnesses testifying, and numerous additional parents of Harmony students in the audience prepared to provide testimony if necessary.

Colonel Bridgford Inspires Students
Army Colonel Robert Bridgford, Vice Commander, 502d Air Base Wing, Fort Sam Houston spoke with HSASA students on Wednesday, January 4th. Colonel Bridgford told students about his personal experience and how he got admitted to Westpoint, one of the world's preeminent leadership development institutions. Students listened as he recounted his rich experiences in the military and his travels across the world.

The importance of dedication to one's education was a continuing theme throughout his address to students. After going all over the world, he attributed much of his success to hard work, education, and the military. The Colonel spent much of his time at Harmony answering the personal questions students posed and educating them on military careers and how to get admitted to the elite military institutions in the United States.

On Saturday, February 18, Harmony School of Innovation - Dallas middle school students participated in the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering (TAME) Dallas Chapter competition.

At the Dallas Math and Science Competition, middle and high school students from the Dallas-Fort Worth area competed in individual math and science tests and participated in an interactive team design challenge. Harmony students captured five first place, three second place and two third place awards

Harmony in NFL 60 Project

Harmony Science Academy - Dallas has been selected by the Dallas Cowboys to participate in the NFL PLAY 60 FITNESSGRAM project. As a participant in this grant, three Harmony campuses in Dallas will receive a variety of program and program-related materials (valued at $1,640 per site), designed to help teachers and students implement the fitness program at their individual schools, including support and training by The Cooper Institute.

Programming Contest Won by Harmony Students

HS Advancement programming team participated in the UT-Austin Computer Science Department's High School Programming Contest last Saturday, February 11, 2012. The contest was made up of 59 teams from schools around the state.

Ryan, Christopher, and Leelund successfully competed in small school division category among 1A-3A schools. Here are the results:

Mr. Bebel of Fox26 Dazzles Students

On Friday, February 24, HSA Houston students were given a few life lessons through the storytelling of Mr. D'Artagnan Bebel, Vice President and General Manager of Houston's local Fox affiliate Fox26, as well as My20 and myfoxhouston.com.

With his eloquent speech, Mr. Bebel dazzled his audience.

College acceptances from Harmony Science Academy Dallas high school seniors are already coming in! To date, we have had 10 students receive good news about acceptance to some of the most prestigious schools in Texas and the nation.

Middle School Success in High School Contest

Harmony School of Excellence - Houston Robotics Team participated in the FTC (First Tech Challenge) competition at San Jacinto College on Feb. 3rd and 4th. The FTC competition is primarily a high school level competition, but HSE was allowed to participate as a middle school. On the first day of the competition, HSE advanced to the finals, with our alliance teams, and won second place. On day two, HSE advanced to the semi-finals and won fourth place. Congratulations to the team members: Lathe A., Saahir E., Rohan B., and Amogh P. for their hard work and successes. 
Microsoft Technology Center Visit

Dr. Chang from The University of Houston invited the Harmony School of Science High School 3D Game Design team to join him on a trip to Microsoft Technology Center in Dallas. It was a great opportunity for the team members to observe how Microsoft design teams work on the Imaginecup competition, and to learn the basics of game design. Dr. Chang also introduced our students to Dr. Bradley Jensen, Microsoft Principal Academic Relationship Manager.

Swim Team Dives in!

We are excited to announce that the Harmony Science Academy Laredo - Swim  Team advanced to the Regional Championships, held in Corpus Christi, TX, on Feb. 10th and 11th. As first-time athletes, they proudly represented our school there despite having no award.

Congratulations to our top swimmers Daniel R. and Alejandra C. for their recent success! The Harmony Science Academy Swim Team is enthusiastically led by Coach Abdul Mohammed, who brings six years of coaching experience from USA Swimming, and has had several regional and state medal performances.

Checkmating the Opponents
HSI Chess
On February 11, 2012, HSI Chess traveled to Austin to compete in the state chess tournament sponsored by the Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League.  The tournament was held in the State Capitol with 22 middle and high school teams competing.

 

Proudly walking in to the room as the current regional champs and the reigning state champs was a great feeling for our students and in the end Harmony walked away with the honor of "state champion".

Alparslan Uzgoren has been the Principal of Harmony School of Discovery for two years. He sincerely answered our questions.

 

1) How and when did your Harmony experience start? What positions have you held so far?

I have started my Harmony career as a computer teacher. I have also had the opportunity of working an assistant principal and curriculum director for the Harmony Public Schools. Now, I am the Principal of Harmony School of Discovery for two years.
