Land Commissioner's Visit

land commissioner

On March 7, HSA-Austin was honored with a visit from Jerry Patterson, the Texas Land Commissioner. The Texas General Land Office is the oldest state agency, managing 13 million acres of state land for the benefit of the Permanent School Fund, providing benefits for Texas veterans and serving as stewards of the Texas coastline.

Commissioner Patterson, in his address to Harmony middle school students, reminded that in the early days of Texas, the official language of the business world was Spanish. He emphasized that people are Texans because they choose to be, not just because they were born here. He used the example of David Crockett, considered a Texas hero, who died during the battle at the Alamo a short few months after arriving in Texas from Tennessee.

Students, teachers and parents attentively listened Mr. Patterson's important remarks on education.

Japan Earthquake Relief

japan

Spring Break is winding down for some, but one local school spent the day holding a Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief car wash and bake-sale fundraiser.

Considering the weather was so great Friday and everybody loves a home-made cookie, the group was very busy.

"We want others to see this and help. We want them to come up with something as well. All of us as alumni at Harmony, we know what it's like to give back and to give help and need help so we want to give back ourselves," said Samantha Joseph, a teachers assistant at Harmony Science Academy in Houston.

Similar relief efforts are carried out at most Harmony campuses. Please check out your local Harmony campus to help Japan.

March in the History

Women's History Month

women's history month

It is an annual declared month worldwide that highlights contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. March has been set aside as this month in the United Kingdom and in the United States.

In 1981, responding to the growing popularity of the event, the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing Women's History Week. This week was well received, and soon after, schools across the country began to have their own local celebrations. The next year, leaders from the California group shared their project at the Women's History Institute at Sarah Lawrance College. Other participants not only became determined to begin their own local Women's History Week projects, but also agreed to support an effort to have Congress declare a national Women's History Month.

Charter Schools Establish Their Niche in Houston

hc

Parents in Cy-Fair and Katy have more options than ever when it comes to educating their children. Something they seem to be considering is charter schools.

Harmony School of Excellence, 7340 Gessner, has a waiting list of 1,400 for kindergarten through eighth grade.

"Parents are looking for the best educational environment for their child," Principal Gurol Duman said. "They want their children to be challenged. Children are coming here to learn, not be baby-sat."

Harmony Schools, operated by the Houston-based nonprofit organization Cosmos Foundation, are college preparatory schools for kindergarten through 12th-graders. There are 33 campuses across the state serving more than 16,000 students.

School of Innovation Opens Doors in the Glen

my sa

Nestled in the heart of a Northeast Bexar County neighborhood known for its high crime rate and low-income housing sits a brand new jaw-dropping, brightly colored, four-story building covering an expansive 78,000 square feet. It is the Harmony School of Innovation, a public open-enrollment charter school system.

Residents ride by, gawking at the brightly colored $10 million structure, which seems so out of place at the corner of Montgomery and Glen Mont drives in The Glen Subdivision.

The official opening of the Harmony School of Innovation - a ribbon-cutting and "Fun Fair" celebration - is set for noon Friday, with its staff and students ready and eager to "show off" their new facility.
