Brain Teaser of the Month

 Something to Weigh!

brain teaser

Each month we ask a logic, math or science-related question in our newsletter and the first three respondents with the correct answer are awarded with a modest gift.

This Month's Question:

Let us start the new school year with an easy question:

We have 40 different objects whose weight ranges between 1 unit and 40 units (1,2,3 etc.).

We have a balance-scale (like the one on the link) to weigh them, but we are only given four (4) different masses (like the ones in the picture) to weigh all 40 different units.

Which four masses will weigh all the units?

Clue: Imagine, you have the masses of 5, 15, 20 and 30 units. You can definitely weigh 40 units by putting 5,15 and 20 in one side. Or you can weigh 10 units by putting the mass of 5 on one side and 15 to the other. But how about weighing the unit of 1 or the unit of 39?

Good Luck!
