Speaking of Paige, last night we hosted a celebration of the authors who have published their books using our book machine. We discussed many amazing titles and had readings from four local authors who have recently published work on Paige. What a fun and engaging evening: Jess Martin, Sharon Pywell, Ronald Richardson, and Vittorio Palumbo all discussed their diverse work with a huge crowd. It was such a lovely time that we'll no doubt have another Paige celebration soon!

Tickets are still available for next week's event with Booker Prize-winner John Banville, who will appear as Benjamin Black, his mystery writing alter-ego, to read from his latest book, A Death In Summer. Learn more and get your tickets here

Globe Pequot Press is currently featured in our Publisher Focus window. Take a look and discover some of their fine travel and destination titles, including The Boston Chef's Table, The AIA Guide to Boston, and (a personal favorite) The Soul of Yosemite: Portraits of Light and Stone.

I'm off to the bookstore to pick out a book to take to the beach this weekend. Shouldn't you do the same? After all, it is FICTION FRIDAY! (All fiction purchases are 15% off!)

Happy reading,
Heather

The Astounding, the Amazing, and the Unknown: A Novel

by Paul Malmont

$26
Simon & Schuster, hardcover
Order
"Malmont, whose Chinatown Death Cloud Peril turned noted science-fiction and pulp writers of the past into intellectual action heroes, returns with a lively tale involving 'death rays,' secret underground crypts, vanishing objects, and mysterious boxes. . . . A larkish imagining of sci-fi greats becoming part of one narrative they can't control. A fun novel, and an informative one in tracing the origins of the genre." --Kirkus Reviews

Islam Without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty

by Mustafa Akyol

$25.95
W. W. Norton, hardcover
Order
Mustafa Akyol traces the roots of political Islam. The years following the death of Muhammad saw an intellectual "war of ideas" rage between rationalist, flexible schools of Islam and the more dogmatic, rigid ones. The traditionalists won, fostering perceptions of Islam as antithetical to modernity. However, Akyol traces a flourishing of liberalism in the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire and explores the unique "Islamo-liberal synthesis" of present-day Turkey.

"In an era when a role for the avant-garde in society isn't always immediately clear, Maggie Nelson draws a marvelous web of connections, ranging from painters to poets, politics to pop culture, carving out a newly meaningful space not only for art but, as important, for nuanced thinking about the world we live in. A rare marriage of the encyclopedic and personal, totally wanted today." --Tim Griffin, editor-at-large for Artforum
