It's HOT!

Happy belated 4th of July everyone.  For all of us in the USA, the 4th of July is our celebration of independence from Great Britain. It was especially fun this year since two daughters of our British friends are here visiting.  They weren't necessarily waving Ol' Glory or the Union Jack, but they did enjoy the weekend at the lake and the fireworks show.  I'm not so sure they enjoyed the heat and humidity. It was HOT!

Speaking of hot, Hegwood Electric is still on a roll with our customers and their orders.  Thanks so much for the opportunities everyone.  Over the next month or so, we'll be implementing a new manufacturing system that will assist us with better job tracking and scheduling. The customer relationship management (CRM) solution will also assist us in improving our excellent service.  Let us know what you think as you see these changes being implemented.
Control Engineering
Updating process control systems

A recent article in Control Engineering by Alex Marcy discusses the opportunities gained by not only replacing software, but hardware as well.  According to the author, "Updating a legacy system with new software is a valid option, but it leaves the advantages of new technology on the table. A control system upgrade should be a time to modernize and streamline to get the most value out of the investment."  Our experience and engineering expertise can help you with these decisions.  Give us a call.

Along the same lines as the above article, we recently attended a seminar presented by Rockwell Automation and McNaughton-McKay. Some of the most startling points made were the following:

  1. Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute estimate over 2 Million manufacturing jobs will go unfilled between 2015 and 2025. The skills gap is the issue.
  2. Many of the present day automation controllers were designed in the 70's and 80's and are well past their estimated life cycle, which presents problems on getting replacements.
  3. It is estimated that there is 20 BILLION dollars in obsolete parts still in service.
  4. The estimated cost due to obsolete part downtime is 65 BILLION dollars.
As Benjamin Franklin said, "If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail."  How much is maintaining your obsolete parts actually costing you?

We can help you with these types of challenges.  Just contact us with your questions.

I'll end this newsletter with several quotes on obsolescence.  The use of technology helps us Create Solutions which we at Hegwood Electric do with Passion. However, sometimes, we have a fear of "planned obsolescence" with technology. Maybe these quotes will help?

"Immunity to obsolescence is the only obsolescent-immune conceit of the past millennium."
Matt Mullenweg

"Planned obsolescence is not really a new concept. God used it with people."
Robert Orben

"People always worry that buying tech products today carries a risk of obsolescence. Most of the time, that fear is overblown."
Walt Mossberg

I hope you have found this newsletter informative and entertaining. If you have any interest in our products or Hegwood Electric services, please let us know.
