An Update for Friends of Highfields · September 15, 2015
A Mother's Love
At age 37, Robin wasn't sure if she was cut out for motherhood. Pregnant and worried, she decided that her unborn baby would have his best chance at life through an open adoption. She began talking to her next door neighbors who wanted a family but couldn't have kids.
When she took her baby to see them for the first time, the way his would-be adoptive parents cared for him scared Robin. They were rough and did not know how to comfort him. She decided that this home was not the home she wanted her son to grow up in. So, she changed her mind.

Board member lends financial expertise
When Kristin Bartley heard Highfields was looking for new board members, she was intrigued. She knew of Highfields, but didn't know much. So, she set up a lunch meeting with CEO and President, Brian Philson. When she heard what Brian had to say, she was hooked.

"He explained what Highfields did and why he was so passionate about it," she said. "The passion he had for the organization, the staff and the people they help - that's what got me interested."

Remembering Judge Drake
Highfields' Visionary Leader
Judge Robert Drake, passed away on August 19, 2015 at the age of 92. We acknowledge his life and legacy as the visionary leader and one of the founders of Highfields.
In 1962, Judge Drake wanted a community-level alternative to prison for the delinquent boys he saw in his court and Highfields was "born".
More than 50 years later, our campus in Onondaga still serves those boys who the courts feel need time away from home to refocus.  In addition, we have added many programs and services designed to meet our children and families at their earliest point of need - not waiting for court involvement. Today Highfields offers 17 programs and serves more than 6,000 people every year in 11 counties in Michigan.
Judge Drake's vision and legacy will continue to inspire the philosophy and values that guide Highfields work.
