ROAR
Student Spotlight

Amilee Youngblood is a 3rd grade student.. She is a fabulous example of a ROAR-tastic student. She is always focused on her classwork, respectful to teachers and peers and she is very respon-sible. Amilee is eager to help friends in her class, whether it's by lending them supplies for a project, or helping them catch up with an assignment after being sick. She is depend-able and hardworking and just a joy to teach!

Jaguar
Staff Spotlight

Mrs. Childress is the Kindergarten through 12th grade music teacher and the middle/high school band director. She has been teaching music for 6 years, and this is her 4th year here at Horizon Science Academy. In past years her position has been K-5 music, but she is really enjoying the chance to reach all grade levels! Her favorite thing about teaching is showing her students new ways to express themselves!

In her spare time Mrs. Childress enjoys spending time with family, watching movies, and baking. She also really likes to travel and has visited over half of the states in the U.S.and 3 other countries.  HSAT administration would like to take a moment to thank Mrs. Childress for all of her hard work and dedication to our school!

Grade bands competed against each other and the 6th grade class ended up being the winners of a special breakfast.

 National Honor Society

On December 15, nineteen HSAT students were initiated into the Jaguar Chapter of the National Honor Society. In order to qualify for nomination to NHS, students had to have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Students were then required to submit an application, an essay, and two teacher recommendations. A faculty council of five teachers then determined membership. Initiates and their parents were invited to the initiation ceremony at HSAT. At the ceremony each initiate was recognized with a certificate and a membership pin by Mrs.Koc and Ms.Blandford. As members, students are required to participate in a school or community wide service project and to complete 10 individual service hours.

HSAT would like to congratulate the following students on becoming members of the National Honor Society: Athena Ramm, Tori Franklin, Marissa Muniz, Steven Hoy, Karon Hill, Israel Douglas, Aldo Ibarra Perez, Timothy Brown Jr., Johana Sanchez, Jewel Kemp, Shy'Asia Wallace, Anastasia Harris, Austin Hendrix, Tiarra Stallings, Dustin Stockton, Gulsu Eldek, Keniya Brooks and Hayden Champnoise

 Engineering a Bridge

Mrs. Leininger's middle school Engineering students learned how bridges are designed to meet load, stress, and aesthetic challenges. After researching bridges and their structures, students worked in teams to design and build a bridge out of popsicle sticks. Teams tested their bridge, evaluated their own results and those of other students, and presented their findings to the class.

Almost all of the bridges built with held the 5 pound weight goal given to the students.  Destruction day is yet to come.   Mrs. Leininger and the students are excited to see what teams bridge will be able to bear the most weight!

You remember them; those old announcements over the P.A. system. They were screechy, too-loud, and boring. This year at HSAT, we're trying something new and different to spread the word about our pawesome school and students.

The Jaguar Student News is a our video announcements which informs students, staff and faculty of the most up-to-date news and activities. The best part, it features our wonderful students.

Mr. McClellan, high school English teacher, is leading the charge, and we appreciate his expertise assisting the students in preparing, filming, and editing these news features. "It's been great getting to know so many of our students through this exciting and fun activity," says Mr. McClellan as he prepares his tablet (which serves as a teleprompters for the student newscasters).

Visit our Jaguar Student News Channel by clicking here. The Jaguar Student News is featured Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of every school week.
