ROAR

Student Spotlight

Harley Lang is an eighth grader at HSAT.   Harley came from Horizon Springfield two years ago and has been with Horizon Science Academy for four years total.

Harley said that  teachers are her favorite part of HSAT.  When she is not in school she enjoys drawing and running.

Harley said if she had the chance to pass along any advice to her classmates she would tell her peers to work hard as they can.

HSAT teachers would like to thank Harley for all of her ROARtastic work and Pawsome personality!

Jaguar
Staff Spotlight

This is Mrs. Heather Alafa's first year at HSAT and third year working with children.  She says that she loves working with kids because no matter how bad they feel or how bad their day is they are always willing to smile and see the bright side of things!

Mrs. Alafa's favorite part of her job is hands down  the students. She wants to tell all students "You guys are awesome and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work with you all".

In her free time she loves to hang out with her family. Her son Emery is  a student here at HSAT keeps her very busy with his activities.

Mrs. Alafa says "I picked my profession because I love helping other people."

Message From the Office

We ask that all parents/guardians make any necessary arrangements with your child in the morning prior to school. When parents call in and ask that we get a message to a child this causes disruption to your child's learning.

Messages will only be given in case of an emergency. The message must be given to the office no children will be called out of class to use the phone.

Book Drive is in Action!
pile_of_old_books.jpg

In an attempt to help ready our students to be successful in their adult lives we are planning to open a School Library. We have the room setup and the fixtures installed, but have run out of funding beyond that point.  We are in desperate need of any and all Children's Books, Tween Books and Young Adult Fiction Books.

HSAT has a lot of eager readers who would greatly appreciate any gently used books in which your loved ones may have outgrown and are no longer reading.  You can drop them off at the school during school hours or if you have a large quantity you are welcome to contact Mr. Riegel at (419)47413350 ext 116 to arrange for them to be picked-up.  Also we have set up a Go Fund Me account and all money donated will be used to fill those empty shelves. You can donate by clicking here.

There is no greater joy for an educator than to see a student discover the joy of reading!

Jaguar Volleyball had a Paw-some Season

The Jaguar Volleyball team competed in the CSAC League this past season.  Throughout the season, the team focused on learning how to play as a team since this is the first year most of the girls have played together.  The team ended up with victories on the score board, but a bigger victory was that the team learned to work together and communicate with each other.   Almost all of the girls will be returning to the Jaguars again next year and we are excited to watch them continue to grow!

College Fair

As part of the career and post-high school planning process, HSAT is arranging College Fairs every year. College Fairs is a great opportunity for the kids to meet with representatives from hundreds of institutions to discuss program, admission procedures and financial aid opportunities and more! Parents especially, are reporting that attending a College Fair at the beginning of the junior year is very beneficial.   As every senior student knows that finding a college and a way to pay for it are at the top of many high school students and their parent's mind.

On October 15th , more than 200 high school students from 9-12th grades and their families met with 10 different colleges at the Horizon Science Academy Toledo's 2nd Annual College Fair.  Information sessions on financial aid, maximizing ACT and SAT scores, and essay writing and scholarships were also offered during this event. Families were provided a chance to meet with the admission counselors and professional career people on their fields. We received great feedback from the discussions.

Here are the colleges that attended this great event this year:

Central Michigan University
University of Toledo-ROTC
- Owens Community College
- Wayne State University
- University of Chicago
- Lourdes University
- University of Toledo
- Eastern Michigan University
- Bowling Green State University
- ETS /TRIO Program

Thank to Mrs.Koc and Mr.Oz

Hollywood at Horizon and Spirit Week

Jaguar spirit  spread throughout the school the week of November 9-13. Students of all grade levels and staff participated in a variety of   spirit themed days including; crazy socks, hats-off, animal accessory, wacky tacky Thursday, and Jaguar spirit day.

All grade levels also participated in a week long Penny War.  The money brought in by students was donated to the American Cancer Society.

High school ended the week with the homecoming dance on Saturday night.  The theme was Hollywood at Horizon. It was very exciting to see all the jaguar spirit throughout the school and students had a Pawsome time!

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather  emergencies, such as snow and ice, or fog may cause disruptions in school operations, including the closure of school or a delayed opening. The following provides information about the procedures used when such disruptions occur.

Horizon Science Academy Toledo at 2600 W. Sylvania Ave. will follow Toledo Public Schools for all weather related closings and delays. Horizon Science Academy Toledo will no longer scroll at the bottom of your screen.

The message: Closure of School means  schools are closed and all instructional programs and extracurricular activities in schools are canceled.

The message: Delayed Opening  means that schools open two hours later than scheduled. Parents should continue to check the television in the event a decision to delay the opening of schools is reconsidered and a decision to close schools for the day may have been announced. The HSAT sponsored TARTA bus lines (HSAT 1, 2 and 3) will run on a two hour delayed schedule when we have a delay. You will need to check the regular TARTA schedule for the bus times if your student rides the 19F or 26D. TARTA operators can be reached by calling 419-243-RIDE. If school is on a two hour delay, students must be their seats 2 hours after their regularly scheduled time.

For public announcements, please tune in to your local television stations for all closing and delay information.  In addition, the message will be updated on the school voicemail at 419-474-3350.
