For many students, 9th grade can feel like the most difficult year throughout your entire high school career. Brenda Sanchez is doing an excellent job excelling despite the challenges of freshman year. She currently holds a 3.25 grade point average and is always striving to succeed. Brenda is also the point guard of our ladies basketball team. Keep up the great work Brenda!

Top Awards Won at CONSEF

On March 9, 2013, 20 5th-12th graders from HSA Toledo attended CONSEF, the Concept Schools Science and Engineering Fair, which was held at The IX Center in Cleveland. Students were judged on the presentation of their project, lab reports, research and display boards. The science fair was a huge success for our students:

  • Three students achieved "Best of Category" awards. We also came home with 6 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze medals. 2 of our students received honorable mentions.
  • The high school won first place (out of 42 schools) for the senior division of the science fair.

Congratulations to the HSAT student scientists and their mentor teachers. They worked hard and achieved so much to make the entire school proud.

HSAT Celebrates Pi Day

The Math Department held various activities to celebrate Pi Day (March 14). Mr. Ballinger posted a pi problem each day during pi week for any student to attempt. The winning students received Pizza Pi as their reward. The winners were: Steven Hoy, Keith Skinner, April Cantwell, Aldo Ibarra, Dajon Reese, and the fifth graders Braedon FitzGerald and Jayden Edwards. Braedon answered the most correct, turning in four correct answers. Mr. Glover recited pi to 51 decimal places...from memory! Mrs. Dowd and Ms. Miller's class celebrated Pi Day in their classroom by having students measure pi using the circumference and diameter of circle-shaped treats (cookies, pies, cheesecake, etc).

Basketball Success

The high school girls' basketball team won the CSAC basketball tournament. The girls won their first game by defeating Lake Erie Academy 26-17. They played the championship game directly after that game against Toledo Islamic Academy. The girls beat TIA in the championship 21-8.

The high school boys' basketball team won the CSAC basketball tournament. The boys beat Lake Erie Academy 58-29 and beat Toledo Islamic Academy for the championship 38-35. Also, a special thanks goes to the cheerleaders who cheered the teams to victory!

Students Work Overtime for OGT Week

During the week of March 11-15th, 10th grade students took their Ohio Graduation Tests in the areas of reading, writing, science, mathematics, and social studies. The State of Ohio requires students to pass all five sections of this test before graduation, and students have been working diligently to prepare for them during and after school and even on the weekends during OGT Saturday tutoring. During testing week, students enjoyed breakfast, courtesy of the staff, and earned incentives for perfect attendance. We congratulate our students on their efforts, and we are confident that we will see their hard work pay off when the test results come back in May. All students who had perfect attendance all week were entered into a drawing for a mini iPad. Congratulations to the winner, Kayla Collins!
Special Reading Guests at Horizon

Students in the primary grades are enjoying classroom visits from local well-known citizens. Our visitors have included Toledo City Council President Paula Hicks-Hudson, Toledo City Councilman Adam Martinez, and local Reverend Ruby Raidford. Each special guest read to one of the classrooms. The visitors received a tour of the new K-12 facility and were impressed with the computer labs and classrooms. Horizon Science Academy Toledo looks forward to a continued friendship with these distinct distinguished individuals.
