Student Spotlight

Burak is 3rd grade student at HSAT, joining Ms. Hrinak's class after moving to the United States from Turkey this summer. He is a shining example of everything a student should be - honest, hardworking, and kind. Burak adds culture to our class with the stories he shares from his time in Turkey, South Africa, and Namibia. He is a friend to everyone, and we are lucky to have him in our 3rd grade family!

Staff Spotlight

Ms. Rashad has been teaching science and math for over 16 years.  She encourages students prepare for college and career success by establishing real-world expectations and integrating technology.  She believes that with support, all students can be successful through hard work and diligence.  She is always looking for the latest idea, technology, or activity to bring to the classroom.  College Credit Plus Info Night

On Tuesday, March 17th Horizon Science Academy Toledo held a  College Credit Plus Parent Information Night to hear Andy Lugar, Admission Coordinator at University of Toledo, and Carolyn Eaton, Admissions Representative at Owens Community College, speak about CC+ and answer questions.

The CC+ will replace PSEO program in OHIO. Starting from 2015-2016 academic year, students in grade level 7-12 will have the opportunity to attend CC+ courses. CC+ provides more options for the students to pursue rigorous academic coursework beyond the high school classroom. Earning college credits while you are in high school can reduce your time and cost of attending college after high school.

We had a lot of families attend and they were able to enjoy a delicious dinner with the presenters and HSAT staff after the presentations.

Spring Means Start of HSAT Baseball

The Jaguar Boys Baseball season is off to a fantastic start. Many of our students are learning baseball for the first time, including at least one of the coaches; it's truly a fun learning experience for everyone. According to Coach Drewes, "With every game, the players are improving. We have a fantastic group of student athletes."

Spring Break at Camp Palmer

During spring break, twenty middle school students went to Camp Palmer in Fayette, Ohio for a week filled with team-building activities, hands-on STEM learning experiences, and some well deserved R&R.  Students found frogs, tadpoles, microorganisms, invertebrates and more in the wetland area, and put their knowledge of design and physical science to the test by making rollercoasters and rockets.  Students displayed strong team work and cooperative thinking skills during canoeing to ensure the activity was a success.  All students and staff who attended had a blast!

HSAT Students Excel at Concept Science & Engineering Fair

Thirty-four HSAT students in grades 5th through 12th participated in Concept Schools' 12th Annual Science and Engineering Fair (CONSEF) on Saturday April 18th. The event showcased student science, engineering, math and robotics projects.  Congratulations to all students who participated, particularly Amanda Gillen-Ford and Keith Skinner for winning the Best of Category awards!

Teachers Spend Spring Break in Turkey

HSAT teachers Mr. Glover & Mr. Ballinger - both high school math - and Ms. Blandford - high school social studies - were fortunate enough to participate in Concept Schools' annual trip to Turkey. It took place over spring break and was hosted by HSAT's very own Mr. Burak and Mrs. Koc. They traveled to Turkish cities Istanbul, Izmir, Denizli, and Antalya all within a week's time.

While traveling the tangled city streets, seeing the beautiful country side, and taking rich historical tours, the group was able to witness so much of what Turkey has to offer. The amazing hosts even showed popular common places in Istanbul plus touching moments with their own family members and friends.

Mr. Glover says: "My favorite place was Pamukkale. It's a place of calcified rock in the mountains that you walk bare foot. The water is warm and the view is astonishing."

For Ms. Blandford: " My favorite part was definitely the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque  historical sites in Istanbul . The Grand Bazaar was crazy, but amazing! The day ended perfectly with dinner with Mr. Burak's family. I still cannot get over the food!"

Mr. Ballinger thought: "Ephesus was incredible! Seeing all those ruins and realizing that they're older than anything in America was great."
