FEBRUARY 2015

Student Spotlight

Rochelle Bauer is a 12th grade student at HSAT.  She has been accepted to 9 colleges and has chosen the University of Indianapolis.  Not only did Rochelle earn a $64,000 scholarship to the University of Indianapolis, but she gets to attend her top choice!

Rochelle's says her favorite part of high school was that it really put her life into perspective and has helped prepare her for college. She wants to tell underclassmen that you can be a straight "A" student and still have a life out of school. She also says that even though the future is still a couple years off, it's best to start planning and preparing for it now.

Rochelle's hard work has paid off and HSAT wishes her nothing but the best in her future!

Remembering Mayor D. Michael Collins

The sudden passing of the esteemed Mayor D. Michael Collins has shocked us all.  At this time, the Board of Directors, superintendent, administration, faculty, staff, students and parents of Horizon Science Academy Toledo would like to extend our compassion and condolences to the family of Mayor Collins and all of those who worked along side him.  Our great city of Toledo has lost a Hero, but his spirit, love and loyalty for the city will forever flourish.

Just a short time ago, on January 28, 2015, HSAT Student Senate members, Senate Adviser/teacher Ms. Blandford and HSAT administrative team member Mrs. Wilbert had the honor of sharing a luncheon with Mayor D. Michael Collins. Mayor Collins encouraged the students to put their best efforts into their education and expressed to them the importance of furthering their education. The Mayor also stressed the importance of family and of establishing programs to best serve the citizens of Toledo. He described several family occasions that have left lifelong smiles in his heart.

The students were grateful that the Mayor took time out of his full schedule to dine with them and share his wisdom and encouragement.  The students shared they will be forever grateful for the experience and the Mayor's enduring spirit of caring and humility.

The presenters of Little's Anti-Bully message reminded and enlightened students about the importance of treating one another with respect and uplifting one another. They emphasized that each student and community member is of equal importance, and students left the auditorium inspired to ignite positive behavior and make it contagious throughout the school campus.

HSAT Supports the American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society is the official sponsor of birthdays.   They help save countless lives every year.  Their mission is to extend birthday celebrations for many years helping people stay well and get well by continuing to conduct daily research hoping to find a cure and put cancer in its place.

They take PRIDE in the organization by:

Helping You Stay Well: They help you take steps to prevent cancer or detect it at its earliest, most treatable stage.

Helping You Get Well: They are in the corner of every patient around the clock to guiding them through every step of their cancer experience.

Finding Cures: They fund and conduct groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer's causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it.

They have played a role in nearly every major cancer breakthrough in recent history like confirming the link between smoking and cancer, developing drugs to treat leukemia and breast cancer, and proved mammography as an effective screening tool.

The students of Horizon Science Academy are proud to become an official sponsor of the American Cancer Society of Toledo.

The students of HSAT participated in a penny war between grade levels late last Fall and the proceeds augmented the many dollars toward cancer research and patient services.  As the kick off to National School of Choice week in January the Student Senate and Student Ambassador members presented a check for over $440 dollars to the Toledo chapter of the American Cancer Society. We take a stand to help knock cancer out!

Test Taking Tips for the PARCC - Begins Feb. 17

Starting February 17th, 2015 all 3rd - 11th grade students will begin the new state mandated PARCC (math and English) and OCBA (science and social studies) tests. These tests are important because they will measure if your student is performing at grade level and will be incorporated as part of their graduation requirements.

The following tips will provide suggestions for parents on how to approach test taking with their kids.

  • Make sure that your child does all their homework and reading assignments; this will help make sure your child is prepared for the test.
  • Encourage your child to do well but don't pressure him/her. You may stress him/her out. It is important for your child to stay relaxed for the test.
  • Keep a positive attitude about tests.
  • Provide a quiet, well-lighted area with little distractions to help your child study efficiently.
  • Mark down test days on your calendar so you and your child are both aware of testing dates.
  • Make sure that your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test.
  • Ensure that your child eats a healthy breakfast and avoids heavy foods that may make him/her groggy and avoid high-sugar foods that may make him/her hyper.
  • Make sure that your child gets up early enough so that he/she will be on time to school.
  • Talking about the test with your child can relieve stress about test taking.
  • Talk and meet with their teacher to find out the best way to help your child.
  • Praise/reward your child when he/she does well on a test or for hard work preparing for a test.
  • Encourage them to read as much as possible, and to increase her vocabulary - even reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books regularly will help improve her reading skills.
  • Help them practice how to follow directions carefully.
